Welcome Gunner. Sounds like you are off to a great start, and continuing in your granddads footsteps - as a Pentaxian
Cheers - JD

Hi Lee,
I started with a K200D and it's a great camera.
Enjoy!

Thanks for the comments guys, will definitely keep using the old kit (not wasting it when it cost £75 in 1973!) but the SP500 may wait a while before being used...

welcome to the forum, I can vouch for the pentaxians. I've been here nearly a year and the members are great, friendly, good fun and most importantly only too happy to help!
PS join the sprint....or marathon.....for a reasonable F1.4 50mm......

A fairly inexperienced pentax user here having bought a K200d as my first DSLR and an optio for the back pocket at parties...
However, I do have my grandfather's camera bag and in it I found an SP500, grip, flash, 3 lenses (more below) and a teleconverter. Alongside all this was the original receipt from 1974 and Pentax catalogue and manuals!
I have to admit that the SP500 was the inspiration for me getting a Pentax DSLR and I'm glad I did as I can now play around with a 55mm f2, a 35mm f2.8 and a 135mm f2.8. Certainly learning a few things this way and taking some pics I simply couldn't capture with the 18-250mm stock lens.
Anyway, hopefully learn some things on here and track down a reasonable FA 1.4!
