Pentax K-3iii with 55-300mm PLM lens and a cheap eBay ring light.
Slightly different processing results BUT this is just for fun and I may take time to take the photos properly next time.

So, what do you think it is?
To be helpful, I'll advise that it is not a coin
BONUS POINTS for knowing what the main difference is between these 2 shots

Been for a wander in the woods this evening. Here's a radioactive fern. Must admit that I played with the blackpoint setting when developing the RAW file 🤣🤣
By the way, I dropped my K-3iii onto the grass, it wasnt damaged at all and functions perfectly. Maybe a new PR marketing slogan - PENTAX, the real photographer's friend - a camera made for photography, and dropping.
Just glad it wasn't a new expensive mirrorless camera!

TYPO - should have read = Ta. You're the guilty one as you sold to me my first proper Pentax a good few years ago (and for that I am very greatful as it's been a great journey so far!)

PRSJNB: Yes please, I would be interested in the full specs of your current machine.
ASUSTeK TUF Gaming X570-PRO (WI-FI), AMD Ryzen 5 5600X, 2 x 16 GB DDR4-3200, NVIDIA Quadro P2000 5 GB, WD Black SN850 500GB M.2 2280 PCIe 4.0 NVMe SSD (OS and programmes), Kingston KC2500 NVMe PCIe SSD -SKC2500M8/1000G M.2 2280 (documents and swap file; LR 5.0 cache file) and Seagate FireCuda 2TB Solid State Hybrid Drive Performance SSHD – 3.5 Inch SATA 6Gb/s (archiving and long term storage).

The Ryzen CPU is an upper-mid range unit. The Quadro P2000, purchased secondhand, is a professional GPU dating from 2017 which supports 10-bit colour displays. It has the advantage of being a single slot card which draws its power exclusively from the PCI-E socket. The nearest gaming equivalent of similar vintage is the NVIDIA Geforce GTX 1060 6 GB, however this is a dual-slot slot solution that requires additional power connectors as its power draw exceeds the maximum available from the PCI-E socket.

A typical 31 GB RAW from the K-3 Mark III takes 19 sec to process using the Deep Prime option with global sharpening and automatic lens correction selected with the GPU option enabled. Without the GPU option selected, processing takes 46 sec, during which time the CPU is running at 100%. Because of this, multi-tasking whilst the file is being processed in the background is not really a viable option. By contrast, CPU utilisation when the GPU option is selected rarely exceeds 5 - 10%, allowing other programmes to be used without issue.

If you do decide to go ahead with an upgrade, which from what I've read may no longer be the case, from the perspective of DxO Pure Raw it is better to invest more in the GPU than the CPU.

Looking at ebay this w/e revealed that suitably specced refurbished machines with a 1 year guarantee are available within your budget of £500.00.

Best wishes

Jon

Thanks for positive comments and the constructive criticism fellow Pentaxians.
Your thoughts have helped me think about what to do next time.

Swarf: yep. I need to go back and try again.
Jonathan-Mac: The river flows through peat areas - hence the brackenish colours of the water.

Living in the flatlands of East Yorkshire I don't come across many waterfalls. Last week I was at Goit Stoick waterfall near Keighley and Bradford.
I didn't have a tripod with me, so rested the PENTAX K-3iii on my bag on top of a nearby boulder (as you do!)
These photos may inspire you to take a tripod and go out and find a waterfall and experiment with fast flowing water. Slowing it down or not, as you wish.
Mine definitely need more careful, proper preparation (and work with the exposures) and I MUST take a tripod next time 😉
I've put the ISO and other data in the pix.
Which water effects do you like best?

I love this new Pentax firmware upgrade for the K-3iii to improve the fast focus.
It made a heron appear and suddenly take off. It was the first time I have been able to see one at close range and get reasonable photos. It still needs some work as the sequence was great BUT the heron flew away from me. Maybe the next version could make the wildlife come towards us - rather than going away from us?

I wonder if Sony, Nikon, Canon, Fuji, OM etc have a feature that makes the wildlife come towards you, rather than away from you????
