Looking through the photo' galleries and at the exif data, I sometimes see that, for example, the f-stop is f/5 and the aperture value is f/4.6.

Why is that and what does it mean?

Thanks for that richandfleur. I'm sure that I 'll have quite a few questions so I'll certainly ask them.

I remembered about the sensor shake thing from three /four years ago when I had the K-r. I thought that I'd broken it after only having it for about an hour!

I have just bought this camera and lens and although no expert I'm really pleased with the results. I have posted a photo of a mallard taken with this combination, not claiming to be great nature photography but showing a nice level of detail in the feathers and water droplets.
Commented on your'pics' RobL. You seem to be quite comfortable with the DSLR. Well done.

Some rather boring news for you all, I'm afraid. K50,plus lenses deal completed. They will be with me on Friday, so I'm assured by SRS.

Be prepared for some of my first efforts with said camera, over the weekend. I shall also be renewing my 'plus' account on the same day.

Just to make things a little exciting for you all. I had beans on toast for tea! Hee! Hee!

richandfleur and dcweather, Thanks for your observations. After these and the comments of johnriley I have the highest confidence in the K 50.

You've selected an excellent combination and it should produce very fine results for you. Once you're underway, do please show us some of your results.
Many thanks, John. All being well it will probably be a week before I get rid of my current 'stuff' and get the new. Life will get in the way of the more important things, this coming week. One dentist and two hospital appointments. At my age these become social occasions!

Just to get away from my previous auto focus post, I think it had run it's course.

After one or two problems, it now looks as though I shall be getting the above equipment. I'm keeping everything crossed.

I would value the opinions of those that have the knowledge as to whether or not I'm making a decent choice. Financially, it has to be the K50. many thanks.

stu62, I have but it is just out of my reach. Also, I offered all of my 'stuff' to a reputable dealer but they came up £100 short of what I wanted.

To compound the situation the person that wanted to buy my stuff, after testing it all for an hour or so on Wednesday and shook hands on a fair price, rang me this morning and offered over £100 less than we agreed.

I shall now stick with my canon 700D and 'stuff'. Not to worry, worse things happen at sea. Thanks for all the guidance you guys have given me, it has been appreciated.

Firstly, Teaka53 [Malc] and stu62. Thanks for taking a look at my 'pic'. I posted it just so people reading my posts could have some idea of the general standard of my photography.

I would be looking at least the same standard using a Pentax K5/II.

Mike-P, I've really enjoyed our 'meetings'. I have understood more about the K5/II and feel happier about what it can do and maybe can't do. I am assuming that you are of the opinion that the Pentax K5II is superior to the Canon 700D as well as the others you mention.

I've gone through a lot of your flickr shots, mainly taking a great deal of interest in your birds in flight shots. The most interesting thing about them and your moving boat, car and 'plane shots is this.

Their is a big difference in the shutter speed in all of your moving shots and in mine. I don't think that I have one bird in flight shot with a shutter speed of less than 1500th. I see that you are getting super shots at no more than +/- 800th when using the K5II.

After I have done this, I shall go out on the back field, round up a few birds, feathered variety that is, at my age it is all I can hope for! I shall have a go at using around 800th for some bif shots. Your assistance has been invaluable.
