This thought just entered my mind. If I put the K-50 into 'auto' mode, or 'P' mode, shouldn't I then get a decent shot regardless? Then by using the settings as a guide, then get another decent shot by using manual? Or does it not work like that?
I'm back out in the a.m. around 08:00 at a local park and boating lake. I intend to stay for about four hours or until I get at least one wretched shot correct. I can't believe the K-50 and the 'new' 55-300 lens can't do better than today's efforts.

Try shooting with your thumb on the AF button, on the right of the screen at the same time as your forefinger the shutter release, I've only tried this technique recently and have achieved the best in flight shots I've ever achieved and shot a motor rally last week with 100% accuracy.
Don't forget to turn off the shutter half press if you try this.

May I ask what camera setting your using as I have a k500 with that lens, have to agree it hunts a lot and my pics do come out dark a lot of the time too.

percy,I think that the prices of the lenses you mention may be too expensive for me but I will check them out. I am working towards the Pentax prime 300mm lens though.
Faint heart and all that, what! If I don't get it right, it won't be for the want of trying. I really like the K-50. It feels exactly right to hold and the viewfinder is easy to look through. My only 'gripe' is that I have difficulty in seeing the green focus light.

Right thought I, just do the same with the K-50 and Bob's me uncle. Wrong! As you can see from the blackbird shot in my gallery, that is not a very good shot but it is about the best that I managed. I went from 800th to 1600th and it got no better. Most of the bird shots were too dark and some weren't in focus. My 55-300mm new type lens hunted an awful lot.
The flower shot is far too dark and like my bird shots I couldn't find any way to get the picture at an acceptable brightness. The weather has and still is a very sunny, and bright day. So why am I struggling or should I have stuck with the 700D. Please don't say yes! Both shots are in my gallery and the wildlife one.

I was told that the pricelist on this site is incorrect and that SRS have told this site about it. Is it possible for an updated pricelist to be added, please?

I've never got a definitive answer to this, but I assume it means that the f stop is the value set and the aperture value is the maximum aperture available at that zoom position.
We could check this by seeing what value a prime lens recorded as opposed to a zoom. The prime may itself vary slightly with focus distance, but not by much unless we get closer than a magnification of 1:10.
That's why incidentally that conventional primes focus to the close position they do. Thus a 50mm lens focus down to 50cm approx., actually often 45cm, but that's close to a 1:10 magnification ratio.

Right, I got out ay 09:00 this morning and rather dark and overcast it was to. I have posted three shots in my gallery and they are also in the wildlife gallery.
They are a vast improvement on yesterday's efforts but still a long way away from what I have been used to. The main thing I noticed is how high the ISO seems to have to be to get a shot.
I started off trying the AE lock button but I think I made a mess of it. I then put the camera into 'scene, moving target' mode and things got better. I made a note of these settings and then went over to Tv mode and the better of the three shots were taken in this manner.
I am sure that I have made a lot of mistakes this morning but I am finding it difficult to get the AE lock thing going. It really needs someone to physically show you how to do something a couple of times and then you are off.
One last thing. On my K-50 screen I got this message. 'Unable to write to memory card', I think that was right. I didn't have anything to make a note of it. I know it means that a picture has not been recorded but what does it mean in terms related to the camera and or my picture card? I am using Transcend 8GB, class 10, 600x, SDHC cards.
PS. All shots are shewn as taken with no 'additives'.
