Shooting a birthday event - What camera settings please?
Posted in General Digital Photography chat
Thank you guys. You post and advises has been a tremendous helo in fast-tracking me to grasping the basics again. Based on the various advice give so far I have opted I now have a rough plan as follows: Shoot in Av mode (shifting between Manual and Auto focus when necessary) and to do a few shots in Program mode as well. Flash will be used with a white plastic diffuser I bought off amazon. White balance set to "Flash" Carry back up batteries for both flash gun and camera. Use 18-55mm lens and probably keep the 50-200mm in the backpack just in case there is a need for it. Use bounce technique. Shoot at ISO from 400/600 (depending on the light conditions) Read up on a few tips, dress smart and try to not look like a novice when taking photos lol. Is there anything I may have left behind?

Thanks man. I appreciate. Will do as advised - take test shot at venue etc. As per White Balance, I usually just see the type of lighting been used on the inside and set accordingly or will I be better off using "Flash" as setting to WB?

You guys are awesome. Thank you so much. I have been playing with the camera and giving myself a crash-course, it appears some of the techniques are starting to come back to me now. lol. I have taken on board what you have all contributed so far. I think the [P] Programme mode and Aperture priority [Av] will both be used as it gives me a degree of control in ensuring a bit of creativity on the shots. During the various test shot I've done so far, the Av appears to allow me to play with depth of field better - but this is just my observation and not a statement of fact. As per the Flash gun I suppose there isn't much to worry about in terms of settings right? The following are what comes up and I have been using so far. 35mm P-TTL A-zoom (Automatic zoom??)and digital display in mm of how the lens is adjusted in focal length I believe. Finally, the Synchronization mode switch is set on two "Zig-zag" arrow! Is this the right settings for the flash please? I am going through the manual but it is probably not the most informative on the flash. lol. Thanks.

Hello people. Due to cold weather and work commitment, I haven't used my camera for a good number of months now, and handling my Kx just kinda feels weird today - should be expected I guess. A family member has asked me to help cover a birthday event, however I am not so sure what to do from here on. I don't want to shoot in full auto only, I want to do something a bit challenging, but not so challenging that the result turns out horrible. I currently have a Pentax Kx, 18-55mm, 50-200mm,SMC Fa 80-320 and a flash gun AF360FGZ. I think it will be safe to assume that for this event, I'm better off using a 18-55 lens and to keep the 50-200 for back up just in-case I may have a need for it? With that covered, what mode -apart from auto - should I be looking to shot the event please? Will I have a need for the flashgun? PS I am taking a few test short right after this and going through the manual just to brush up on what I may have read before. Thanks.
How do I do HDR?
Posted in General Digital Photography chat
So with a Kx, Photoshop and Lightroom in my stash, how do I go about doing HDR please? I know the Kx can be set to take HDR shot, but what else do I need to know? Thanks.

Cannot disagree with anything said, but if you want to get some of that color back it is a 30-60 second fix to change the white background to a decent blue. Dunno if PSE allows for different draw modes, but hopefully the following will work for PSE Pick up the brush tool. Set the brush to about the color of blue you want. Set the draw mode to "Darker Color". Set Opacity to 50% You now just paint roughly over the white. No need to be too careful. Anything lighter than your brush color will go blue. Everything darker will stay untouched. The gray twigs wil remain visible even if slightly lighter than your brush since you're only at 50%. Dab over some areas with the Blur brush if the color transition is too rough and you get sharp edges appearing. OK, this doesn't work in all cases, but it seems to work well on this one. (and no need for pesky masking , where even with CS5 can take a few extra minutes). Thanks man. I will definitely give that a try.

Thanks guys. Here is the original one - as shot. (See below) I used a high ISO, so I am not sure if that counts for why the white bits appears blown out? Thanks for all the tip, I will fire up PSE and do the adjustments on the lights. (Image quality just scaled down on this one)

Okay, so it is a Gray squirrel. C&C welcome. Minor editing done - Played with colour curves, hue and saturation and a contrast. Plus a bit of cropping.
Quick Question. Rear Sync on Pentax Kx
Posted in Flash Photography
Thanks. Just wish they would just call it same name. Too many different names and more or less similar functions lol.

Thanks. I saw it, but the explanation was a bit different from what Kelly was saying. Once again, thanks.
Quick Question. Rear Sync on Pentax Kx
Posted in Flash Photography
I was reading Scott Kelby's book and on the section for Portraits, he advised using a "rear sync" function in the flash setting to capture more background. (His example was for canon and nikon) I am not sure this function is available on a Pentax Kx or is it called something else? I am not sure this function is available on the Af360 flash gun either. Can anyone shed further lights? Thanks.
Contemplating on returning the Kx due to battery issues.

Thanks guys, just to report back I have opted to charging the batteries twice as opposed to the first time it shows the green lights when charged, and it appears to last longer. So all in all, it appears the I need a very good intelligent charger and not a timer based charger.

Pentax SMC Fa 80-320 fits a Kx?

Anyone know if the Pentax SMC Fa 80-320 will fit the Kx? Also will feature like auto focus work etc?

Yes I have updated the firmware, it was the first thing I did. My other observation is that the included batteries (Energizer) last longer than the ones I bought. So on that note, may be I need to get myself an intelligent timer as stated in the link I posted (Current one is timer based)

I have couple of low discharge battery brand, and for some weird reason the Kx will claim the battery is depleted after less than 50 shots or so. I have the eneloop and camelion brands. Software has been updated too. Is there anything else I can do or just return it? A few number of people complaining about battery issues. . . http://nedbunnell.blogspot.com/2009/10/k-x-battery-notes.html

Manual mode on Kx.
Posted in Pentax Digital SLRs
I just played around and what you guys mentioned is making more and more sense. One thing though, I have changed the AWB for Shade - Shooting indoors with minimal natural light. I currently have a flashgun attached to the camera, is there a need to increase the iso? I am currently shooting using 200, will this about okay or I need to shoot at 400? Thanks.
Manual mode on Kx.
Posted in Pentax Digital SLRs
In my manual mode on my Kx, It do not have control over the EV Value, unless I adjust the speed or appeture value. I thought Manual allows full control over the needed settings? I am a bit confused here, any one care to explain the basics please?

[quote:3496ace15f="ElRazur"] As for shooting modes, for the flash use P-TTL for now and set the camera in M mode. .Thanks man for your input. Are you saying I should set the camera to Manual mode (and not the flash) right?

What about the built in "diffuser"? You know that plastic thing that goes over the flash (and also the white paper) By the way, how do I adjust the strength or power of the flash? What mode is best to shoot in on the Kx etc.

Thank you guys. Galoot scared the jesus out of me with his initial comments lol. I have to admit that it is a bit overwhelming at the moment, I just bought a kx with twin lens, photoshop elements and now the flash gun. There is so much to learn lol. As per the flash, I just went through the manual and most of it is not making much sense to me at this point, I mean, what is pttl  Having said that, the manual can do with a bit of more clarity. I guess this is where I get to pay for the mattmatics book lol (Any link to this actual book please) So far I just bolted it on the camera and tried taking some portrait shots of my house hold and to be honest it looks pretty rubbish lol. Too harsh and looks kinda flat, so I welcome all tips. I have been asked to help take some portraits picture of a friend, and I have agreed so as to see what I can do etc. Hence I am wondering if this single flash gun is okay for what I want to do? (Basically, high key type of portraits) I also have couple of "Bownes Espirit 250" and hardly use them, so do you guys think the Pentax flashgun should be okay to achieve result like some of those posted in this thread, if used alone? Thanks and apologies for the long post lol. PS May post some more as I am playing with the camera and flash gun.

Which battery for Pentax Kx?
Posted in General Digital Photography chat
Thanks guys. I opted for the newer version of the Sanyo Eneloop at the end, I will post back to see how they fare. @polchraine I used them in my previous camera so may be age is a factor, had them for over a year or so now.
