yeah, you'll have to experiment.
I'm big on using longer focal lengths, when you can.
I get giddy when I can put at least ten feet between my subject and the backdrop, then back up with a 100mm lens to get ther shot. Not always doable.
The zoom comment has to do with using variable aperture zooms, with manual strobes. the same rule applys to the kit lens. If you change the zoom, you'll need to re-check your exposure settings to compensate.

You certainly know your stuff , i think youve covered most of my questions, good to hear youve experience with the actual light kit and thats what ill go for first i think.
Do you have any examples of portrait/glamour youve taken with similar kit as then i know what ive got to aim for!
Just need to get the wallet out and get spending.
Cheers.

Ill have to experiment with both lenses i reckon .
For the time being ill be offering my services for free and when i gather more experience i will slowly start charging a nominal fee to assist in the purchase of better lights as ive seen they dont come cheap!

do you think that light kit is a worthwhile investment?
interesting comment on the kit lens , i hadnt thought of that as the little bit of reading ive done so far is pointing towards the longer lens can you advise me please?
I know you cant say exactly but with the lighting tips you advise and the kit lens what kind of aperture and shutter speeds would you employ ( tripod mounted ).

I have a variety of girls that would like me to do some portrait and glamour shots for them .
Ill be using my k10 and the tamron 70-300mm lens i have.
A friend has said he has this light set he can let me have for a good price - do u think its any good ? or would i need extra lights?
I was trying to find information on the lens and apparently the sweet spot is around f8 just wondered how that would relate to taking photos with these lights and zoomed in but not to the full 300mm in a stuidio.
Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated!
cheers.

I just wished you read every word carefully in my last post and Interpreted them the way intended. All youve done is reply to me in a patronising manner like you have done to other forum members here in this very post string.
Please read this:

I'd like to quote a couple of lines from the interview with Benjamin Kanarek in the latest Pentax user mag. Page 11, last paragraph.
"My advice to anyone is that when it comes to photography there is no right or wrong. If you want to totally blow out your highlights then do it, there is no-one who can tell you that your picture is overexposed if that was your artistic intention. If they tell you it's wron them I'm sure their work is very pedestrian and utterly boring. You can't hurt anyone by experimenting through photography. I wouldn't give the same advice to a brain surgeon though"
I believe that Bejamin Kanarek is absolutely right with the above, you have to take the pictures that YOU like and process them in the way that YOU think is right.
I like the Tiger the Tiger REMAINS as is!!

now then im not going to change my stance on this post im not going to name names or directly relate to anyone individual but after reading through several of the posts from the past i noticed a few conversations that had occured before i joined and they regarded to things such as "not being that friendly to new joiners" and "some people have an elitist attitude" and "one had reference to pack like mentality" from my necomers point of view i do feel that im made to feel not worthy and that some how my views arent required and the few suggestions ive made have been denegrated, im not saying this is everyone as i have had many good people giving me advice and appreciate that but this forum is about the members and if people like myself arent made to feel welcome we will go somewhere else - perhaps you want that? and some of you may reply with an acidic response if thats the case ill look somewhere else and advise my work colleague who just snapped up a k10 to perhaps look somewhere else for support and thought sharing - after all i was the one that sung my praises for the k10 i also have a friend who is looking into the dslr route what do i tell him? Maybe because i am a newcomer i could have shown a bit more respect to certain posters but then this is cyberspace and not reality as im sure we wouldnt talk to each other like this face to face in the street only recently i bumped into dogdirt up the top of a lighthouse in dungeness i didnt even know he was a forum member when we first started chatting about our pentax k10's, we had a smashing discussion about photography and this is when we found out we were both members , he has had his camera longer than mine , i listened with keen interest as he gave me advice and shared a few tips and i gave a couple back it was a pleasure to meet him - so what am i trying to say?
- We are all on here for one reason photography its not about whos right or wrong but the asking of questions , the sharing of knowledge , the giving of assistance , praise of ones work and the fact we had the wisdom to make the right purchase - This i why i joined and i hope i stay joined , Thankyou to all the genuine members that have assisted to me so far.

compression of feild effect...
makes a big nose look small.
wide angles work great for anorexic stick girls, with pretty features, and also for profile shots...
but longer lenses help average people look better.....
link
here's an example of compression of field effect...
the little cabin is about two football fields behind the subject. had I shot with a wide angle, the building would be tiny in the frame, and the road, trees and old fort would all be in the scene as well.
