Mike's shot is absolutely streets ahead of the Canon. No contest.
On what grounds?

It's more contrasty, sure. And it's smaller, so it appears sharper. It's also at 100mm longer focal length, so all other things being equal, it should be better.

On the web, I'd probably agree it has more impact.

But in terms of actual visible detail, I'm not sure I agree. It's a tough one to call, with the different lighting angle and size.
There is maybe one day's difference in the phase and the lighting surely is identical. Mike's photo contains much more detail, I don't think I've seen a better example of a handheld shot at that focal length.

I did confine my search to proper camera shops though.

Good photos, sharpness, exposure and colours are all good. The lion could do with a chin. Animal portraits work best for me at the animal's level, I don't know if that was possible with the rhino and the leopard in the gallery. The parrot is therefore the pick for me.

I can't understand that old chestnut police line. If I were a terrorist I wouldn't be setting up my tripod around London. If I wanted a picture of a shopping centre, train stations or the tube I wouldn't be holding up a camera in front of my face and carefully composing the scene. It's the easiest thing in the world to photograph surreptitiously. I wonder if the police realise how stupid they make themselves look.

I'm generally not so keen on summer landscapes, apart from summer storms. I much prefer the light from the solstice onwards. Unfortunately autumn colours are looking rubbish here, but I like how trees give up their form in winter.
