Just need to build a bunker to mount it in...
Seriously, although an old lens...
possibly subject to vibration problems in low light...
and be horribly affected by heat haze...
I bet it would work very well for video shots of wildlife...
you'd be far enough away for the target to remain undisturbed.
However, in addition to the £1500 for the lens....
you'd need to fork out for a big Manfrotto and a gimbal head to do any follow shots...

in the darkroom, with chemicals that were never consistent...
and with dodging and burning...
you worked the picture until it came close to "what you perceived"...
which, of course, it never actually did!!
With the image on this page... the walk to the b-b-b-b-each... all it needs in the last shot is a bit of compression...
bring in the black until there are some distinct blacks in the foreground...
then slide the mid-point a tad further toward the white...
that should give you more of what you saw, whilst retaining the detail you exposed by lightening it....
I still think you were brave, venturing outside...
I would have been in the Sole Bay Inn...
cuddling a pint!!

My idea was not to give hints and tips in that fashion... rather, I wanted to see how well people cropped their images in relation to their given title.
I have been involved in display work since '64 and have often had to re-crop [with scissors of scalpel] other peoples work... to either fit the subject better.... or fit the display space.
In this instance I wanted people to fit their pictures to the subject [title].... and in the re-cropping I have tried to show that.

No, they weren't... You may think that I have cropped too tightly... eg: Batman and Robin.... but that was deliberately done to 'fit' the title.
Had the title or comment [sub-title] been "Batman looks for clues in the moss... ably assisted by Robin" there would have been a need to leave moss to the left of Batman... as it was, the pale branch in the background on the left, distracted from the two subjects.
As you said, it is a matter of personal choice... and we are all up against that when entering competitions.

techniques, tips, skills and point of view, etc...
Looking at your pictures, it is a shame you didn't enter....
you may well have been in the winning group...
it is clear that you are skilled at cropping to a title!
And to both you and Pentaxophile...
yes, I was presumptious...
but for the reasons given above...
and all images were credited to their owners.
Have a thoroughly enjoyable end of year and may you all never run out of space on your memory cards in 2013

Not necessarily...
if a 6 by 4 crop works with the title you've chosen for the picture, then fine.
But don't forget I'm looking for a picture that has been cropped to show an image that wasn't thought about when composing "in camera"...
it certainly doesn't have to be an outlandish, or unusual, image crop...
a picture that when looked at again, can go from a good picture to being a cracker by getting rid of a thin slice off the side...
or a chunk off the bottom, or both...
and ends up more or less 6 x 4...
is fine.
Don't forget, most cameras don't show the whole picture through the viewfinder, so often the picture on screen is more than you imagined when you composed the photograph.

enough to hold most peepilz pix, surely...

[In the same Dabs.com advertemail this morning I noticed that anyone who went with Office 365 has to pay again to access their files and continue using the programmes....
