I hope that this hasn't already been posted elsewhere: Uwe Skrzypczak's book Wildlife Photography: On Safari with Your DSLR: Equipment, Techniques, Workflow is being offered for a short period as a free download from the DPR website. Here is the address: http://www.dpreview.com/news/2011/12/17/freeebook2

It is advertised as available only on Saturday 17 December, but I have just downloaded it (i.e. Sunday 18th, 10.40am GMT) so there might still be time for other UK photographers to grab a copy. Worth a try for anyone who's interested.

All the best,

Chris

My first K-5 was a 3xxxx job. No sensor stains but had low light AF faults. I got it replaced.the replacement and the 2nd K-5 I bought soon afterwards were both 4xxxx copies and had no sensor stains. they didn't have the AF problems with FW 1l04 afterwards.

Is there a firmware 1.4, Smeggy? Can't find any mention of it elsewhere. Perhaps just a typo?

All the best,

Chris

Currently using the Tamron SP Di 90mm 2.8 Macro, very high IQ with great OoF rendering. Manual focus is smooth and nicely damped, the focus limiter allows very responsive AF when used as a nornal Telephoto, it fits nicely into my lens kit between the DA-70 and FA-135. The only thing I miss is the focus lock of the old FA-100/2.8 Macro.

I agree wholeheartedly with John. The Tamron is excellent, both as a macro and as a standard telephoto lens. I've been delighted with it. SRS are offering it at a good price (£339) at present.

John, your gallery is very impressive, if I may say so. The bird shots are terrific, and the steam trains just classic.

All the best,

Chris

Nice to see rocket blowers - work of the devil - get a panning.
I'd be interested to know why you think the Rocket Blower is the work of the devil? In my opinion the only real problem with it is not the device itself but the fact that it doesn't come with any instructions. When using it to blow dust off your sensor it's easy to blow dust onto your focusing screen - or worse, behind it - if you use it incorrectly. If you use the proper technique there's very little chance of that happening. Hence it should really come with some form of instructions - other than that I don't really see a problem with it.
Sorry if this is hijacking the thread. Mark, I have a rocket blower but haven't yet used it on the sensor. I don't think I will now, until I learn the 'proper technique'. Could you explain what that technique is? I'd be very grateful for instructions.

Many thanks,

Chris

Got quite excited by Smeggy's discovery until I discovered that the utility is Windows only. However, I've found a Mac file changer - not free, but cheap at $10. It looks pretty versatile and promising: http://manytricks.com/namemangler/

Graphic Converter is indeed editing software for Macs only. It is very reasonably priced and it is well worth checking out: see Galoot's link above. It revealed, amidst a mountain of information from a raw file, that my 4xxxx replacement K-5 was manufactured on 15 February 2011 (my sensor-stained returned K-5, serial number 3xxxx, was late 2009).

All the best,

Chris

If you have a Mac you can use GraphicConverter to view the same data.

GraphicConverter

I have version 6, not the new version 7, just open up a RAW file and, click on 'Information', it's free to try.

Thanks, Galoot, that's really helpful. I was thinking I'd have to smuggle a file into work and try to download Photome without anyone noticing. I have Graphic Converter on my Mac but hadn't thought to look there. I will now.

Thanks again,

Chris

Sadly, five weeks seems not to be exceptional and some people wait much longer: http://www.pentaxforums.com/forums/pentax-k-5-forum/135087-how-many-days-before-...

I presume that the past few weeks have seen a peak in returns because of all the publicity.

All the best,

Chris

For the benefit of anyone waiting for their replacement K-5 and wondering how long the turn-around might be, I got my replacement today. It took five weeks from the date that I sent it back. It seems to be a new camera, albeit in the old box. The serial number of the old camera began 38741; the replacement's serial number begins 40037. So far I've only had time to update it to firmware v1.0.3 and to test for sensor stains, a nerve-racking business: after peering at the screen through my fingers for several minutes, I'm pretty sure that there are no stains, not even any dust.

I'll have to set up the camera once more from scratch, but that's OK. I shall look forward to getting to know it all over again. Yesterday I was feeling pretty disgruntled (owned the camera for nine weeks, had the use of it for three), now I'm feeling positively chipper. What a fickle creature I am!

Finally, a word of praise for Warehouse Express, who oversaw the exchange efficiently and without fuss and who, unusually in this day and age, kept me informed of progress throughout.

I gather we're in for a good weekend for photography, but unfortunately I'm working so any further tests will be delayed.

All the best to those who are still waiting,

Chris
