K5 Sensor Issues...

Hi all,

Sorry for not getting back to you all as quickly as I would have wanted.

I have had lengthy conversations with Pentax UK once I was made away of the situation with some users experiencing sensor blobs/stains. I can assure you that out of the large number of K-5's sold, it is a small percentage of users that are affected - no consolation if you are one, but it's worth mentioning.

We have taken a few telephone numbers and will be contacting you tomorrow.

If you feel your K-5 has an issue with stains on the sensor, we will collect the camera from you free of charge. We will then assess the camera at this end, and if the sensor has the staining/blobs we will issue a replacement camera. We have low stocks of the camera at the moment so this might take a few days. The alternative is that, once we have checked the camera and found an issue, we will send the cameras to Johnsons Photopia, Pentax authorized repairers who will then either repair or replace the camera.

Either way, we should be able to turn-around your camera within 7 days.
If this leaves any of you without a camera, I am happy to lend a K-7 to keep you going! This is our initiative and has nothing to do with Pentax, and we will send the camera to you free of charge. We can arrange to do this when we collect your K-5. We have a limited number of cameras we can loan out, so to help us out I would kindly ask you to only request a camera if you have no alternative!

It’s my boys 18th birthday today, so I am not going to be around this evening, but I will be happy to answer any questions either by PM or email in the morning. I think a few ‘medicinal’ drinks are in order…

Please rest assured that we will sort this situation out for everyone.

Many thanks Chris, I'm sure that will set a lot of minds at rest.

I've made the post a sticky for now until it's all done and dusted.

And that's why I would never buy camera equipment from somewhere like Jessops. I can't imagine them going the extra mile.

Unfortunately I won't be able to buy a K-5 anytime soon, but I think you're offering great service, Chris. Any chance you're going to open an SRS shop in the Netherlands in the (near) future?

I must say I am impressed with the after care service offered by SRS here. I normally buy my camera gear 2nd hand frm Ebay, but if anmd when I buy somethign new I can certainly say that it will be most likely from SRS. The k-5 could be that first item too. I'm n9ot I can wait for the 2nd hand market to appear.

However I would comment on ....

This poll

http://www.pentaxforums.com/forums/pentax-k-5-forum/poll-596-a.html

and the poll here indicates otherwise ....

I can understand manufacturers spinning it to look like those affected are a small minority but I would rather they were honest or say nothing.

Both polls show a majority have the issue in roughly the same proportions so telling us it's only a small percentage doesn't wash. No reflection on Chris@SRS as he was clearly only the messenger here.

Sorry, but the polls are flawed as are all these polls. Those who vote are self-selecting and only a very, very small sample. All these faults get over-blown on the web, it's the nature of the beast.

Thats what I call Customer Service. Thanks Chris. Hope you enjoy yorself tonight.
If it helps (as I really need my camera at the moment but my 'bubbles' are not that bad) I can wait till you got enough stock back in and have sorted the others with real bad markings before you carry on with mine.
After new year I have a quiet time and it would be ideal to have a K-7 to try for the time being as this would be my choice for a second body and would give me the opportunity to try it out whilst you deal with my K-5.
Speak to you guys about it tomorrow.
Many thanks for such a great service.
Kind regards

You are right faults do get overblown and that's why I didn't comment on particular hyperbole and only commented on the polls.

And yes no polls are perfect, but you can make a general extrapolation from them

Quote:

I don't understand where a 'conspiracy' would fit in?? This is a genuine fault which has affected a great many users.

There is evidence of this problem affecting far more than a small percentage. There is NO evidence of this just affecting a small percentage of users other than just hearsay from Pentax. Pentax are bound to say this will only affect a small percentage of users and that's a flavour of spin that one could get away with pre-internet days. However we are now in an era of mass communication between users and companies have to be really careful what they say when the experience on the ground could otherwise.

I'm still going to buy a K-5, I'm currently selling stuff to fund one soI can buy one sooner than later. I'm still a huge Pentax fan too. but I'm also a realist and spin that is contrary to what looks like reality doesn't wash with me.

Chris,
Thanks for the update (shows why its worth going to a Pro Dealer) – as I said in my email I will wait until after Christmas before deciding what to do. Hopefully Pentax will have made it clear what the cause is by then. For me the most important question I would like Pentax to answer is – will the marks get worse with time – that would have a big influence on my decision as apart from this I’m very happy with my K-5.

Dave.
