actually, the 85mm was on the camera body and the 50mm was reversed onto the 85mm so the flash was mounted to the bayonet of the 50mm.
I used a 58-49 stepdown ring to act as a spacer between the 50mm bayonett and the ringflash and yes I taped the rig together with electrical tape (right width).

12 mm, and sharp center and fuzzy edges is what the 85mm soft focus lens does....

I've seen some great macro shots in other threads and thought I'd start a new thread on that subject.
Here's what I got when I reverse mounted a 50mm 1.4 to my istds2 mounted 85mm soft focus. Also rigged up my af080c ringflash to it.
It's a 1974 canadian penny.

See, and I couldn't for the life of me figure out why you'd burn out the retinas of your subjects. Who am I to judge...so I tried to figure out what could be done with what you were asking...
I envisioned a tripod mounted gun with the camera acting as both scope and trigger.
I was hoping if that be the case the gun would be pointing at a gopher hole or something waiting for the gopher to walk into focus...
Sounds a little dangerous..I don't recommend trying it.

See what happens when my wife lets me watch "CaddyShack"?

I'd try running a wire spliced into a homemade wired release (search the threads for that one) and solder the wires to the circuit board of the laser's power switch, maybe with a relay and or resistor to activate both at once. Maybe wire it to a hotshoe adaptor.
might be easier to handhold a laser pointer...
Your not planning on wiring this sucker up, to use it as a sight so you can mount a mf lens to your af body, set it to snap-in focus, and mount it on a rifle with a servo to the trigger are you?

And I thought af assist lights and preflashes were hard on the eyes....
pentax ftz 500 flash has a sb (spotbeam) setting that fire a red pattern for af to focus on, without firing flash...works in total dark and on solid colored objects.
Ps I'd bet the local hardware store miht have a laser level with standars tripod socket hole you could rig up.

sounds to me like you figured it out...
ps there's a couple more ideas....spotmetering on the subject....taking a reading off your hand...graycards...handheld meters...

Metering more art than science, (many will argue) but truthfully it'll take a trip to the library or bookstore and some reading.

Pros? you get more control of the image making process and have to think more which'll give you more incentive to pay attention to other details like composition and light and subject matter...

Think military snipers with one shot one kill vs marines hit'em hard and fast with tons of lead in the air.

Ever hear of the vw bug?
the pentax k1000?
Pentax is thinking longterm.
subtle Improvements to to the existing line-up...means not having to release model after model of unsellable cameras to keep up with the canikons. Newer better cheaper means old unsellable stock, more tooling more r&d and higher costs!
When they do release a higher end slr where will the 645d be?

I remember Honda had to leave its vtr1000 motorcycle a gutless shame of a bike to avoid competing with it's own 929rr. Honda could've blown Ducati and (suzukis tlr 1000) away if had chosen to do so, but at the expense of picking it's own pockets?

I haven't tried it for "eyestrain", but I find vodka is good for pretty much anything that ails ya'.
I mean if I feel a cold or flu comming on, I figure that alcohol kills germs, and if you get enough in your bloodstream...I mean really, what've ya got to lose? You were going to feel like heck, later on anyways...

I think pentax could bank it's survival on the open source community.
Instead of wasting time and resources on developing proprietary software and pef files, go with adobe dng format, incorporate free software ( lens correction software that fixes certian lens/body combos and matmattics sharpener and an apple aperture like system into a gimp editor) with an online service such as this and .mac. And then get those low cost istl/samsung bodies into the hands of junior high school across the world.
