And now, the long awaited *ist DL2 ? ? ?

Yet another model added to the bottom end of the DSLR lineup

http://www.pentax.co.jp/english/news/2006/200603.html

WHY, WHY, WHY ? ? ?

There surely can't be anything left to prove at the bottom end of the market. I don't understand why The Pentax design team are not focussing (no pun intended) at the top end of their market to add features to their digital SLR's.

The *ist D is a fine camera that is well overdue for a software revamp to make it an even better tool. In my view, the *ist D hardware package is about as good as it needs to be. With a serious rethink of its firmware it could be much better. The features 'wishlist' is documented well enough elsewhere on this forum.

Please Mr. Pentax (Japan), no more digital toys and more digital tools.

Well the DL hardly needed replacing, it was only released last year!

To be fair though, it is good to see Pentax updating their products instead of resting on their laurels and falling behind the competition.
The DS2 and DL2 in particular are the most important models and need to be crammed with gimmicky picture modes etc. in order to appeal to the novices that crave as much 'bang for the buck' as possible.
I'm not at all bothered about the extra focusing points and picture modes but I can't blame Pentax for including them.

I don't see me being in the market for a new top of the range pro-spec model for quite some time but knowing Pentax, I'm sure it will be something quite special.
Die my dear doctor, that's the last thing I shall do!

Ever hear of the vw bug?
the pentax k1000?
Pentax is thinking longterm.
subtle Improvements to to the existing line-up...means not having to release model after model of unsellable cameras to keep up with the canikons. Newer better cheaper means old unsellable stock, more tooling more r&d and higher costs!
When they do release a higher end slr where will the 645d be?

I remember Honda had to leave its vtr1000 motorcycle a gutless shame of a bike to avoid competing with it's own 929rr. Honda could've blown Ducati and (suzukis tlr 1000) away if had chosen to do so, but at the expense of picking it's own pockets?
Fired many shots. Didn't kill anything.

Reckon it must be a region thing.
The *ist-DL2 is not available in Europe.

Featured differences between DL & DL2 are available here:

Hope that helps.
