Some images will reqiure minimal compression, and some more therefore the level of detial, and amount of subtle tones should affect how much calculations are required to compress the final jpeg from the raw data.
A shot of a grey card should compress quickly (to a smaller file)and a shot of a jar of multi colored beads should take longer( but not compress as much).
ps I could be wrong here but a black might induce a longer exposure and therefore kick in the noise reduction algorythims therefore increasing the calculation time.

I don't see any point in having a new computer for every new camera body.
I believe that adding more computer into the camera body, and new processing/wireless networking/pda features will reduce he time I spend behind a computer, freeing up more time for taking pictures. So I think ALL sugestions about software features should be heard.
I'm opting for high dynamic range images, and in camera panoramic stiching with raw data.

preloaded on every mac is enough software to get anybody started.
I know there are tons of books out there, but I prefer magazines.
I feel between magazines, forums like this and a computer that was designed from the ground up to be easy to use...will have ANY photoenthusiast up and running digitally..in no time, with the added benifit that less time behind the books, and computer screen equals more time behind the camera...
Good choice in camera by the way.

for what it's worth I find the ds2 to be easier than my old mz5.
why?
I tend to use it on manual, often with manual lenses or lenses with an aperture ring. I set my aperture, push the ael button (hyper manual) and dial in any exposure adjustments with the wheel and go. where things get easy, is dialling in iso changes whenever needed.
