there was a 500mm f5.6 mirror lens out there . pretty cheap....I wonder how well that would autofocus with the af 1.7 teleconverter....that would be like a 1300mm f10 telescope (roughly).

I think Strobist about sums up fair use:

Everything you see on Strobist is copyright David Hobby in the year that it was first published. (In the case of third-party contributors, they retain the copyright.) That does not mean that you cannot use material from the site, only that there are a couple of rules.

If you want to link to the articles, that's cool. It's what makes the blog world spin. Feel free to post brief abstracts of the original posts -- the pithier the better. Please limit your verbatim "excerpts" to two or three paragraphs at the most. A prominent link to the original source is required, lest we confuse anyone about the source of the content.

of course, one could fit a larger (say 18 mp) sensor into a digital body, and call it a 14 mp camera.

Why?

well if you only used 14mp central area of a larger 18 mp chip, for creating the images, but also used the remaining outer area of the sensor (possibly with lenses/masks placed over it) for exposure/color balance/noise calculations...

esp with live image preiview, that might be workable and affordable, also if you were buying 18mp sensors for medium format camera bodies that were already obsolete....

lays the design for a full frame model option too if one wanted to keep that door open...

yep so true.
It may be dumb luck that it failed after you sold it.
it may be rough handling, but the post office.
it may be the guy who bought it broke it.

Any way you cut it, it may boil down to "What is your reputation worth vs. what was the camera worth.

I'm with you on that point too....
18-55, 16-45, 12-24, 16-50, is all too much....

Pentax needs to drop the 18-55, make the 16-45 the basic "KIt" lens (imagine the reviews in the media when the kit lens on the Pentax holds it's own against the competitions "Pro" lenses!).

Drop the 12-24, take a smidge off the price of the 16-50.

entry buyers choose the 18-250 or 16-45. simple.

advaned buyers, 16-50 everybody wins, esp Pentax's reputation for having the finest kit lenses in the industry!

When the bodies prices- drop (due to aging specs), then the price for the total kit remains the same (as todays), and when new bodies become available you'll want to buy one, cause you already got great glass.

I prefer to buy the right lens to begin with, but here's a software package.
I've never used it...but it looks good.....

light tent.
somewhere in the past I posted a how-to on making a $10.00 light tent with a collapsable laundry hamper. that's solve your problem quite nicely.

Don
yep.

one common mistake people make is to think that one flash needs to be set lower than the other to give a light ratio...(ie 2:1).
that is true for an individual portrait, but with groups using the 45deg setup you describe, the flashes should be putting out equal power.
carefull aiming of lights will get it right. (see my earlier post.).

I say use anything. from white foamcore, tinfoil and cardboard, bedsheet, strobes, hotlights, mirrors, whatever. the only good advice is this...if you're spending your hard earned money....get the best quality you can afford. look for build quality.

then practice with it till you've learned to get the most out of it. for best results, in portraits get those lights as close to your subject as you can. softness in light is subject to the size of the light source relative to the size of the subject. the sun is huge, but because it is soo far away it appears small, and therefor creates a hard light on the subject

look at the elinchrom quadra (largest square softbox, under lighting solutions) to see what I use, and you'll notice a similarity between it and an umbrella, it actually is a giant umbrella and sets up in seconds!!! it's like four feet across!
