I'd love to buy the 16-50....and nearly did, but a sale price on the 16-45 clinched it for me. I'll just work around the one stop diference. I have plenty of lenses and back-ups.
If I was in this fellas shoes... I'd opt for the second body, and give the fast primes some exercise.... I think it would be foolhardy to step into a wedding arena, armed with only one camera body.
triple redundancy...is best
one in your hand, one in your hip pack, third in the camera case.
same with batteries...one in the camera, one in the bag, one on the charger.
same with memory cards.

good+steady....
can't go too far wrong...
also don't shoot a wedding with only one body....
rent/buy/borrow a second and slap your fast prime on it.

in answer to your questions, the white spots are in fact reflections off dew drops....the grass was very wet (visible in his fur too). handholding with a telephoto in the morning shade explains the softness, shot on a ds2.
I would'a slapped on a flash, if time had permitted, and got some extra sharpness and a catchlight, but he probably wouldn't have stuck around if I had tried to run back to my van.

That's a very brave male spider in the second pic - hasn't he seen the documentaries showing what's about to happen to him?

try for a set of lenses with constant apertures (having to re-calculate your exposure everytime you zoom your lens sucks when using studio strobes.
since you have access to both film and digital bodies...
it would be nice if you had lenses covering the same feild of view (ie 1.5 crop factor on the *istd) so you can PROOF your shots on the digital, before committing your shot to film (film being harder to find and more expensive...get the twelve exp rolls of film, unlike your film only students, you'll be wasting alot less shots).
in fact the lenses it performs best with are short range, high quality zooms, prime,s and manual focus lenses like the 85mm soft. I get decent results with a sigma 400mm f4 and not so hot with the pentax 28-200.

Also best to have redundancy in photographers!
