In my old job (bouncer), way back when...I used to tie my ties in a double windsor, then cut the tie in the back, and sew on velcro strips. One time (there were a couple) this guy tried to grab me by my tie...by the time he realized I wasn't in it, I had ducked under his arm, stepped behind him and elbo'd him in the kidney.
Nothing like pee'ing red at the hospital for a week to make a big bully re-think the whole "Pickin' on a little guy" routine! So I've always been adverse to dangling things around my neck!
Plus I know how to fall without hurting myself.
So I go with what works for me. Many years and no gear broken yet!

put yourself in a push up position on the steps/ground, and you'll see that if you had slipped and caught yourself with your hands, the camera still hits the steps/ground.
If you fail to catch yourself with your hands, the camera still hits the steps/ground, before your sternum/stomach comes crashing down on top of it.
and if you are in a bad neighbourhood, having the camera strap around your wrist, (that would be one of the rare places/times where I'd use a strap) will give you something to hold onto if you want to play tug-o-war with a robber, without giving him the leverage to pull you off your center of gravity, and strangle you.

crack your lens on a rail or ledge. get tangled in the bushes, grabbed by a mugger and used to choke you....your lcd screen rubbing across zippers, and buttons scratching it up...
hip pack/ slingbag/ backpack much safer. In your hand forces you to think about it, and therefore it's safer.

Second safest place, in your hand.
Place where it's most likely to get damaged? Dangling around your neck.
The strap it came with is fine if you heed my advice and leave it unattached to your camera 95-99% of the time!

basically fires the flashbulb BEFORE firing the shutter....

Sigh. All I want is a nice simple camera. Maybe I will go back to film, there was never a problem with film.
wrong iso settings on the dial...
hitting the end of roll at decisive moment....
scratches across 35 shots from dust in the camera back...
fogging from static discharge when cold..
film not exposed cause the winder didn't catch...
accidentally opening the camera back with exposed film inside...
photofinishers trying to convince you your camera is defective, rather than admitting they don't know how to print...

there's more than a few peoples here that could have feildday with them. must've been a thousand or so, each a few millimeters across.
