But I am a little confused as to how the Ist D is not still a competitive mid-range D-Slr for those who already own pentax lenses?

£2 each, which seems worthwhile if they have any kind of life. I ran out my rechargeable AAs at brands a couple of weekends ago and spent £10 on two four packs on duracell sooper doopers. First set lasted 250 pics then kept having to turn camera off and on to get another three pics...
so i'd expect the CRV3s at £2 each to last better than that!

Q. What types of batteries are available for *ist D?
A. The *ist D can be powered by the two CR-V3 lithium batteries, four AA lithium battery, AA Ni-MH rechargeable and nickel batteries, or AA alkaline batteries.
Note: We do not recommend using rechargeable CR-V3 batteries with our digital cameras due to issues with the output voltage. Specifically, avoid rechargeable CR-V3 batteries with these designations: RCR-V3, CR-VX, BP-11.

well as i understand it no-one actually is cleaning the sensor - what you actually clean is a piece of glass that protects the sensor.
So i thought i'd do a bit of a test, i got a piece of glass (old filter) and a piece of plastic (that should have far less scratch resistance than the glass) and i attacked them with some pec pads
first i cleaned them gently and carefully with the wet pec pads. Then i cleaned them pretty roughly with the pads.
Then i turned the pads round and stabbed at them with the handle of the pec pads.
I just about managed to mark the plastic, and left a couple of tiny marks on the glass. Which i then just rubbed off with a lens cloth.
So i decided that it's probably pretty safe to clean the sensor yourself as long as you are using proper swabs and not a scouring pad.

My Ist D is now a couple of years old and has had plenty of use in less than perfect environments. I had to clean some pretty impressive lumps of dirt etc off the sensor (was almost a hammer and chisel job) but i'm thinking maybe it's time the old girl got treated to a proper clean and check up.
Can anyone recommend somewhere (and an idea of prices) where i can get the body properly cleaned, not just sensor but given a damn good hoovering. Also any places that can give it a bit of a general check over and service?
I'm based near oxford with work but go home to suffolk pretty often so ideally somewhere near one of those would be good.
cheers

Sadly if it's £1200 or so like the D was then against something like a Canon 30D it will get blown out of the water.
(Well i'll buy one in a couple of years once the price has dropped and keep my D as a backup)
