K30- a question or two

Hi,
I'm planning on upgrading from a K-7 to a 2nd hand K-5.
A few questions about the K30 before I rule it out.

1. I really like the AF-point selection dial on the K-7 & K-5, this is 1 of the reasons I'd select the K-5 over the K30.

The K30 doesn't have this dial but has these two options-
set the RAX/fx button.

The K-30's Status Screen gives you a good overview of all relevant shooting settings but is not really interactive. However, you can activate the AF-point selection by long-pressing the OK button. It's not as nice as the K-5's AF-mode switch, but works pretty well once you get used to it. (from DPreview)
Does anyone know if you have to be 'in' the display menu or does it work from just preseing it no matter if I'm in the display menu or not?

I still think I'd miss the dial- it's nice to be able to glance and see what you have it set to.

2. How noisier is the shutter slap sound? I've seen this on Youtube but can anyone tell me from real life experience how much nosier it is?

I also like the metering mode dial on the K-7 & K-5 and the top panel lcd. I'll probably 95% go for the K-5 but am just wondering about these things.

I live in far off Galway so can't get my paws on a K-30 to try out. I suppose I could always sidegrade from K-5 to K-30 down the line if I wanted.

That's abuout it for now.
Cheers,
Pa.

Hi Pa. Can't help with the first question - not something I've looked at yet or ever used before (upgraded from a K-r). I could look, but wouldn't want to give you the wrong answer and will leave it to someone more experienced.

As for 2. Not as noisy as the K-r, but louder than the K-5. If I was seriously into wildlife photography it would be an issue I think.

Wouldn't worry too much for wildlife. Have you heard those Nikons and Canons. Noisier than my K-x. Have a pal with a Canon 7D and a 5Dmkii. He refers to my K5 shutter as silent

On day one of K30 ownership, mine seems to have the AF point selection up by default and select using the cursor buttons. Holding Ok changes mode to use the functions on the cursor buttons, but default is AF point selection.

If other people have it the other way then it must be a settings option.

Think Pa means the little knob below the mode dial which you have on the k7/5 to switch from centre point to select point to auto select. For me, this was one knob that I very rarely fiddled with.

I got my K30 a few days ago and have a K7, the K7 is a lot quieter, I find the shutter noise on the K30 also sounds much less refined. For me I'd like it to be quieter but the benefits of the low noise and extra dynamic range more than make up for it and am glad I made the move.

As discussed elsewhere I can confirm the K5 is very quiet indeed. I think it's the mainly cast metal body (plastic over the steel chassis on all the entry models including the new one)that keeps the noise down as well as of course the seals which the K30 does have.

My K30 arrived at 0830 this morning and the K20 part exchange was collected. SRS triumphed again, very well organised and much appreciated. Spare battery charged and Firmware updated, Pentax battery in the charger and cashback form printed off.

First impression (just by firing off a couple of frames in the lounge)Sounds like a K10 but with steroids, fits the hand very well and I like the menus. Wish it had a swivel screen but what the heck! Looking forward to the daylight hours tomorrow.
Enjoy life

Shutter - a bit, but not much quieter than the K-r.
