At 6400 it does play havoc though with the shadow textures of the horses skin - compare the neck area of No4 at 1250 (amazing!) with the same area on Nos 6 & 7 ( not so amazing). But overall, at the ISOs and speed of movement involved not a major issue - I'm not sure if you could get much improvement out of noise reduction though, as I suspect there would be quite a price to pay in extra blurring.
Hi Nigel, it's great to see your analysis at work on these shots! I think we look at these with different eyes so to speak. I'm more interested in the overall appearance, fluidity, action etc. rather than looking for technical pluses and minuses. There has been a lot of comment on the relative performance of the K-3 versus earlier Pentax bodies (notably the K-5 variants), much of it frankly rubbish. I think we are seeing consistently in images posted by a variety of contributors the flexibility and all-round ability of the K-3 in a variety of shooting situations. It is probably a more flexible beast than the K-5 is, yes, I'm sure the K-5 just beats it in the noise department, but only just and the K-3 has so many more plus points in its favour.

Well done to Alan for producing a great set of images that really convey the atmosphere and action of the day, regardless of the noise levels!!

Cheers
David

Lovely shots Steve, I agree with Nigel about cropping a little off the top, but I would have been proud to have shot these.

Thanks for this update Dave, it looks as though the K-3 first impressions are good for you. When I first got mine I found the AF back button also a bit strange, but after having used it for a month or so I actually now find this position far better than the one on the K-5. When I use the K-5iis now I find myself searching for the AF button with my thumb whereas on the K-3 it falls into position naturally.

I'm looking forward to seeing some more wildlife shots from you with the K-3.

David

A great set Alan, that noise is really horrendous isn't it?

Joking aside the K-3 has served you well here and your skill as a photographer has produced some excellent images, it's good to see these as they are very different to what we are used to seeing from you. I think you've captured the action brilliantly.

I did this to my Saab 9-3 last year. There is a company called Fuel Doctor 0845 873 5508, they will come to you and drain the tank completely, then they re-cycle the fuel drained out. Whatever you do don't try to drive the car as you will most likely ruin all the seals and may actually ruin the engine. My car was fine afterwards, but I had realised straight away and didn't even start the engine.

In all honesty, given the conditions and knowing how hard this little species is to photograph, then I don't see how I could better these shots.

Congratulations Charlie and welcome to the Forum! Those shots are great, I have tried many times to photograph the Goldcrest that visits our garden in the Winter months to look for food in a large fir tree. I have so far failed miserably in comparison to what you have achieved here. Perhaps now I have a K-3 it might help? Or maybe I'm just not very good.

Season's greetings to you, Shaun. I often think of you marooned in the blighted north without the comfort of your favourite brand. I miss your wonderful landscapes inthe Gallery.
He's not in the 'North' Andrew, he lives in Cheshire! Also he's got his favourite brand, it's called 'Nikon'

Great results Steve, I think we are starting to see the potential of the K-3. No AF tracking required of course but the IQ is pretty impressive.
