Beautifully sharp and colourful. I do think you might have an advantage over us Brits here due to the light levels. At the moment I struggle to get 1/100 at F5.6 and ISO 400 and that's stretching it a bit in the sharpness department when trying to hand hold 420mm of lens and teleconverter.

Both are very nice images, especially the colours and the exposure control for me. I'm not 100% sold on the compositions, but I would have been proud to take either one.

There are so many different approaches you can us for landscapes it is difficult to recommend a single lens. For example, I love my old Pentax-M 28mm F3.5, it's very sharp but not a flexible as a zoom. I also liked the Pentax 16-45 when I owned one. The DA17-70 was very good too, but tended to vignette with my filter holder a little.

For all round landscape use the best lens I have owned (and still own) is the 12-24. Nothing else comes close if you want to use a zoom IMO.

Just a quick reminder, I know it's the Festive Season and everyone's very busy with other things, but there are only 3 entries to the Monthly Competition so far, it would be nice to get a few more!

Maybe use the season as an inspiration to take a few photos of things that are important at this time of the year? Families, decorating the tree, presents, good company, the list is endless!

Thanks in advance.

Well done from me too Steve, the pictures look very good and as mentioned above they suit the newspaper format.

Number 5 really is very good, I remember seeing this on the Gallery or perhaps in a previous Forum post. Colours, composition, exposure, lead-in are all first rate and it combines together to make a winning image.

There are many algorithms for getting explored.

There are many out there that make this their lifes goal to get as many explored and to have the highest position of the day explored...sad.

There are many things you can do....

Here are the things that I have discovered...

* Post only one photo a day (do more so at night because thats when america is looking)
* comment on as many peoples photos as possible
* use only 5-8 tags
* only share to five groups max
* share your photo on social media
* add tags, metadata to where its taken etc.

Unfortunately there is a lot of sh*t on explore too - for some reason the page is obsessed with dolls and police cars.

What gives?

Be careful going down the explored path - it can mess you up

Thanks for the information Alistair, I never set out to get anything 'explored', I just post a few pictures and hope someone likes to look at them. I'm not a prolific photographer, I have no desire to earn any living from it, but I do try to aim for quality.

I suppose some people on Flickr set out to gain as many views, favourites and comments as possible whereas others just use it as a storage medium. I use it for neither, I just like to put a few of my better shots on there.

It's not 'total pants' Russ, it's excellent and I've already commented on it in the Gallery. I love the silhouetted plants and the deep colours of the reflection. I also like the dark area at the top and I think to increase the exposure on this one would have been counter-productive, it is 'just right' as it is.

Got home from work today and opened up my Inbox, to find it deluged with activity on one of my Flickr shots. Now, I don't post that many on Flickr, my account only has 83 photos, mainly due to the fact that I don't have much spare time for my photography.

It turns out the shot got 'explored' and has just short of 10,000 views so far with over 250 fav's. I'm not sure why this has happened as it isn't one of my 'best' or 'favourite' shots. What makes an image 'explored' and why this particular one for me link?

I love the shots posted by Russ and Stephen here, they are my ideal of what HDR should look like. Both beautifully composed too.
