I follow the usual advice for cleaning both the front and rear surfaces of a lens.
Some dust is actually harder than glass and _will_ scratch the glass or coating it if it is rubbed in to the lens surface with a cloth, so I follow this cleaning procedure:
1) Use rocket blower to get rid of loose dust,
2) Use clean blower brush (i.e. a brush you have cleaned by wiping on a clean cloth to remove any dust from the brush) to very gently remove any stubborn particles and from around the edges. It is a good idea to blow air through the brush bristles (using bulb or a blower) to try to give them a charge to help pick up dust,
3) Then (and only if needed) it is a Calotherm cloth that has been kept in its protective bag.
However, I expect the level of care to increase with the cost of lens!
Thanks for all the advice, it's mostly what I have been trying to do, but only to the front glass. I havent dared touch the rear in case I introduced particles into the mechanism. You have given me more confidence but from what you are all saying I must get a better quality microfibre cloth than the one I use at present.
Kind Regards David

I have never heard of ROR but a quick look on the WEB suggests you may be on to something. Might give it a try myself if you get get good results. Please can you let me know how you get on?

I see plenty of information on lens cleaning and they all seem to discuss and show cleaning of front optics. I have noticed that at times the rear optics of one of my lenses looks as if it could be a little dirty, viewed in certain lights/angles/conditions.
Question
When the time comes should the rear optic be cleaned the same as the front optic or should it be left to a professional? Any special precautions or useful links etc would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you David, i couldn't find an update for the 100D either, but i'll definitely have a look at the Pentax Japan, thanks for taking the time to help, i'm on windows vista. I think i'll get my son on to it he's more computer savvy than me, thanks for the tip about the installation advise too, you've been a great help, i'm sorry i've only just seen your post.
Hi Maria
I have had a look today and the update is still there so I think you should be OK. Best of luck and do let me know how you get on.

On the K10D you can lock the mirror up and watch the sensor flopping about! Probably can with the K-5 too, at a guess.
I'm sure you can if only to prove the point, but rest assured it's a perfectly normal Pentax DSLR IS feature.

Yup perfectly normal, I think most DLSR's with unbuilt image stabilizers do it to some degree. It can be quite noticeable at times, it's only the sensor shifting in the body. This is then moved about as required to stop image blur as you press the shutter release.

When you have pressed the green button have you checked what exposure time it has calculated. It could be so long you are just not prepared to wait. IE could it be exposing for several minutes?

Hi Maria
I had a look and couldnt see update for K100D on Pentax UK but its there at Pentax Japan for UK users and it does have update to make SDHC compatable among other improvements.

You should find it by link below. Firmware Update Software Version 1.02 for K100D.

Regards David

PS
I cant see download for windows Vista onwards but I'm fairly certain the XP version will work OK. Thats because Vista wasnt released until after the K100D update. Please read all installation advice before installing firmware as a wrong move could make camera unusable.

Yes, I agree the tractor pix are just great. I'm with you Adrian when you say lens test reports can confuse. What's important to me is the result I get with the lens on my camera not what some magazine writer, probably with his or her own prejudices, writes.

Hi David
Most impressed with your photobucket images, brilliant colours and crisp images. As yet I havent achieved any as precise as yours with my K7 and the kit lenses. I take it non of yours were taken using kit lenses. Still cant decide what lense/s to get as I am on a tight budget.
Again congratulations on a fantastic web site

Whoever it is he is only having a bit of fun, if you are that sensitive to the fact other brands exist then he will have the bigger laugh. If however we embrace the fun then we can all enjoy a bit of light hearted banter.
