Great shot David. You have chosen wisely.
In all honesty it is better than the 170-500mm I have, I tried one at focus and it is faster focusing and sharper.
Big thumbs up.

Slightly off tack but just posted above a problem I'm having with mine. On my K-r , AF is fine for reasonably close objects (say up to about 25-30m) but after that it is very hit or miss, making a clicking noise and going back and forth either side. This seems to happen in reasonably good light and most subjects. It's unusable for distant birds in flight, helicopters etc. Do you think there is a fault. DAL 55-300 seems much snappier and to be honest I was expecting the opposite.
Forgot to say Liveview takes forever to autofocus, dont bother with it, thats unless you get your flask out while you wait.

You assume correctly, it applies to all camera settings such as colour, white balance, sharpness etc. The Raw software will simply read those settings and open up the RAW file with them as a starting point.

The RAW image does have any changes made to it at the point of capture regardless of camera settings, what happens is the camera "remembers" the camera settings you had at the time and these are stored within tha RAW file, when you open up the image in a RAW converter (depending on what you use) then some software can read the camera settings information from the RAW file and display the RAW file with those settings applied. You obviously then have then choice to keep them or not.
If understand you correctly the RAW image itself is not affected at all but the data is stored and can be used by some software so you can select amend these settings when editing in a RAW editor etc.

I understood when shooting RAW images the in camera sharpness settings only affected JPEGS. I have just realised that if I shoot RAW only & adjust the camera sharpness settings the changes appear in the RAW image properties. eg
If camera is set to a small amount of extra sharpening as well as "Fine sharpeness 2" in properties it shows as "hard" sharpness.
However if I set fine sharpeness to off/normal and reduce the sharpness slider downwards a little the photo RAW properties show sharpness as "SOFT".
I havent as yet studied the images closely to see if actual image sharpness is affected but I will if I get the chance.
Advice, views & comments appreciated

I said I was obviously not taking pictures of the cars, he could see I was leaning on the wall looking outwards to take city photos. He then went on to say the city council had already prosecuted someone for photographing the city from a public building. I said I doubted it, he then became very heated so I packed up my camera and sat in the car till I calmed down.
What do think I should do or have done?
