Do the better Metz guns not have an external power socket?
I may be misunderstanding you here, but yes the 48 and 58(mine) certainly do and this is the three pins I am referring to, which I won't be using now.
I haven't even looked to see how much the power pack is, but it's going to be way too much when just the cable is £24.

BTW, now I know the power pack is not just a bigger battery, the third pin is likely to be a communication pin to control the output of the power pack.

OK, further down Stephan's link they go on to talk about the proprietary pins and the high voltage packs George mentioned. Essentially you can't use the pins as they bypass the internal capacitors and are rated for high voltage and low amperage.
So I have to make dummy batteries and shouldn't expect any great increase in performance - just longevity.
Although as most batteries are half dead most of the time, in reality, my flash should feel pretty sprightly all the time and I won't have to make trade-offs with the camera settings to preserve the flash batteries.

I'll keep you posted.

BTW, I was just wandering through Maplins looking for a battery for my Flash remote trigger when I saw the 6v SLA and had a brainwave. I should have known it's all been done before

Thanks George,
Wow! 300V
I knew you could add a battery or two but, bloody 'ell, I'd never have guessed that!
The Metz has two pins at one end, then a gap and a single pin. If you have any ideas which pins I should use and their polarity that would be smashing
Meanwhile I'll keep digging.

Thanks for the link Stefan, perfect! Although I'm hoping my kit will look a little more professional than that
Thermal pin... that sounds plausible, I'll check that out.

I have bought a 6 volt sealed lead/acid battery to power my Metz.
I'm hoping that the recharge times will go down, but will be happy just to get more duration - especially for this Wedding coming up next month.
(I'll keep an eye on the temperature of the flash).
The power cable is £24 which is about £20 too much, so I'm going to lash it up with something else.
Does anyone know what the three pins do in the power input socket? I was hoping to see two

It wasn't a commotion about nothing.
They made their point extremely well and created a witty and humorous viral video, which will fly around the country and make people wake up to the ludicrous society we are creating, driven by paranoia, fear and misinformation (Daily Mail anyone?).
If they hadn't used megaphones it would have died there and then.
I thought the rucksack thing was a bit lame and undermined their point, but the bit where they picked on a likely terrorist was fine - it just goes to show that this country still has a sense of humour, which is absolutely vital.
Not so long ago, I could go down to Exeter airport and wave to my family on the plane and show my son the Hairyplanes. Now thanks to the Nanny State, I can't get anywhere but the terrorist can still lob a morter over the fence - they were hardly likely to use the viewing platform to mount their attack... shheeeshh

Anvh is bang on.
For that clubbing atmosphere -
The kit lens will be fine - keep it wide and try around f8 and 1/10th sec (or less!) keep everything manual including focus (you might be lucky and have enough light for the camera to focus, but it's doubtful).
Keep the flash power as low as you can whilst still freezing the local objects momentarily. The exposure will go on to capture their movement and the other ambient lights and objects.
Don't be afraid to move the camera while firing.
