Well, there's a ship, and it's passing, in the (nearly) night. Although I have to admit, without that title, I might not have realised it.

What are you actually using them for, and why do you need an illuminated screen?

Just wondering if a basic manual flash and a torch might be just as useful, and a lot cheaper?

So did you lot all dress up as goths to blend in with your subjects?
I believe they were all wearing corsets.

I especially like Barrie's first photo (and subject ) so far, but all good. Wish I'd been there.

I've just moved the photos thread into the 'My Photos' forum, they'll be a lot more 'visible' there. Looking like it was a good day, only wish it wasn't so far from me.

Have Pentax scored another own goal with the pricing of the k-x?

Sure it looks like a cracking camera, but as their entry level model isn't it way over priced in comparison to the competition?

SRS prices:
k-x with 18-55 - £599
Nikon D3000 with 18-55vr - £439
Olympus E450 with 14-42 - £389
(and you can get the Olympus E620 with the 14-42, grip & extra battery for £499)

Sure it will probably come down in price, but it has a way to go till it reaches that of the Olympus or Nikon cameras.

Wasn't the KM a successful camera because it competed so well on performance AND price?
Apples and Oranges really, the D3000 and E450 don't compare with the K-x specification-wise, so it's to be expected that they should be cheaper. The K-x has a higher frame rate, higher pixel count, video, HDR etc.

Perhaps it is mid-range, but I think, with the KM discontinued, Pentax really need an entry level model to compete.
Absolutely agree with this!

Very interesting.... I am surprised you got that close to LHR !
I would expect that the flight took Rob right across both runways, that's certainly where we went on my flight. If you're in a Police Helicopter, doing security checks, you go pretty much wherever you need to. They do check to make sure it's safe first, of course.

There are other rules which effectively prohibit fixed-wing single-engine aircraft from swanning around over Central London, since they are required to be able to glide clear of built-up areas in the event of an engine failure.
Helicopters for use over the city also need to be twin-engined, in case of engine failure. Originally the Met used Bell 222s, then AS-355 Twin Squirrels, now the EC145.

Lippitts Hill! I used to work there and had a similar flight, although that was pre-digital for me, and I was a somewhat green at the end of it due to all the circling they used to do in the Squirrels.

Nice shots.

Opticron do make an SLR adaptor (at least they did last time I looked, this year some time - here's a link) but your comments on aperture and stability are very true, often the working aperture is f/11, with an effective focal length of 680mm or similar. It all depends on the scope, the objective lens diameter etc.

Digiscoping with a compact camera can be very succesful, but I think with a DSLR it's likely to be less so. Even the Opticron website has a warning about it:

Quote:
It should be noted that while it is possible to take perfectly acceptable high magnification photographs of wildlife in a wide range of environments using a telescope as a telephoto lens, the relatively small apertures, fields of view and depth of focus put an upper limit on the quality of the final image and one’s ability to successfully frame shots at close range.
Bearing in mind a decent scope, eyepiece, adaptor and mount is going to cost around £1,000, I'd much rather go for the flexibility and quality of a DA*300mm and a 2x teleconverter, for not much more.

They are nice Neil!

Gareth, the silhouetted ones were at dusk, we had contemplated the trip there for dawn but travelling across/around London is either very expensive by public transport before 9.30am, or you get stuck in traffic for ages at some point if you drive. We chose travelling later on the train.

By the way Neil, you've got a dust spot, to the left of that silhouetted stag.

So, when a painting is photo-realistic, it's not art?
