I use Photoshop Elements, and when you 'save as' a jpeg you get the following dialogue box appear, where you select the quality (amount of compression) and can preview the result of the compression on your image (you can zoom in and out and inspect the image in the background). The file size is shown at the bottom of this box (circled). It may well be different in whatever image editor you use.

Hope that helps, glad I was useful before (a novel experience for a man, eh Don ).

Hi Lilly,

I assume when they say that maximum 'size' should be 1Mb, they mean the file size, ie. a jpeg of less than 1Mb. What you need to do then, is keep your image dimensions as large as possible (the number of pixels w x h) so that they can reproduce the pictures as large as possible, while still being able to maintain good image quality when compressed (as a jpeg).

So the best thing to do I think, is:

a) Have a look at the paper, and see what the largest size they print pictures is. If it's whole page, then you need to work with as large files as you can, if it's never bigger than say 6x4, then you can immediately reduce the 'Document Size' to 6" x 4" (15cm x 10cm) etc. If for some reason they then wanted it bigger, they could always let you know (make sure you offer them this option if you do resize).

b) Try saving an image as a jpeg by selecting 'Save As' from the 'file' menu, don't overwite your original. This will ask you how much you want to compress the jpeg, and if you select the 'preview' check box, it will tell you the file size - this is the bit you want to keep under 1Mb (1000Kb). Keep the compression as mild as possible, so select between 10 and 12 ideally. If you can't get a small enough file without going below 8, I would suggest going back to resize your image, and reduce it a bit. It shouldn't really be a problem if you're already down to 6"x4", but probably will be if you're trying to work with an image straight from your K10D - depends on the amount of detail in the shot.

Hope that helps, I'm sure there'll be more advice along in a minute!

I use a manual flash with my istD, and haven't got a proper pentax one as I don't use flash enough to justify the cost. My Centon has a swivel and bounce head, which I like, and as Peter said, it just pumps out all it's power in one go.

I really only use it often when taking macro shots, and I know then that f/11 will give me a good exposure. If I'm taking people, then a couple of test shots will get it right, and shooting RAW gives a little leeway.

Recycle time is 2 seconds too.

Lilly, if you use flash a lot, then I'd say it's definitely worth going for the AF360 at least. If it's only an occasional thing for you, I'd say have a play with your 220 and see how you get on - you may find out that for what you need it for, it's perfectly capable.

Of course, if you've got £150 rattling around in your purse, then go for it!

Hooray! Seems as though the clouds will break a bit next week.

Brian, keep that camera with you - Metcheck says you might have a bit of snow tomorrow!

All looks like we're in for some 'photographic' weather, in the UK at least.

I've already taken several hand-held shots that are only slightly soft, with an exposure of 1/10 s (a tenth) at the long end of my old KA Sigma 28-200 (wide open, admittedly), which is 300mm on my K10D in old money.
Ah, but try freezing action at 1/10s - sometimes a higher shutter speed is needed, and to get that you need a larger aperture.

And, as George says, the quality would be astounding compared to your old Sigma.

Liam beat me to it!

Just noticed that this is quite a big file too - 600k+ - so it might be better not to have it linked in, for those using dial-up.

What's the biggest file size we should have for showing on here? Any limits? I've always tried to keep under 100k.

Spidey,

I think you might need to use a different link to show those pics on this forum, I would guess it's the link to the right of the screen that shows the pics on Photobucket (where it says "IMG Code - Forums & Bulletin Boards".

I'll give it a go:

Tim,

I'll think you'll find from the EXIF data that Matt was on a pogostick at the time, so the SR did wonders for the image.
