Valerie Singleton. Apparently it was the "The Blue Peter Royal Safari" in 1971.

Couldn't find any pictures though.

Highlights perhaps blown a little, but not for long - I ate those bits first.

I think an annual forum day out is required! Settle anyone?!
I'll be there - I can recommend the Hot Chocolates at 'Ye Olde Naked Man Cafe'.

When I was in Yorkshire a few weeks back, I went to Settle, and had to go in the camera shop there because they sold nothing but Pentax.

No idea what their prices were like, or what they had really, just that it was all Pentax.

When browsing in my local camera shop over the weekend I saw a new AF360FGZ flash for £100.
Thought I saw the same when I was in Jessops the other day, but on second glance I saw it was their own brand '360AFD'.

I was in Edinburgh Castle a few weeks back, and walking round the Great Hall I was firing off shots, turned round and saw a Canon User watching me, and noting my camera. He wasn't taking photos. A little smugly, I thought, serves you right for not having Anti-Shake (I was using shutter speeds of around 1/3 - 1/6 second).

A few moments later, I realised mine wasn't switched on, and all the shots I'd taken should be blurry.

But when I checked them later on, only a couple were significantly blurred. Most were like this one, taken at 1/3s:

Usable definitely, but the AS would have helped.

So a steady hand still comes into it.

Monitor refresh not withstanding, I think the results pretty much wrap up this debate.
Hear hear! Well done to you for such a decisive first post. Welcome to the forum, just remember you've set yourself a standard now - all your posts will have to be as good as that one.

In normal use, without shake reduction, you should use the 'reciprocal' of the focal length as your shutter speed, to avoid shake. So a 50mm would need 1/60s (the nearest to 1/50), a 200mm lens would need 1/250s.

Shake Reduction gives you approximately 3-4 stops extra leeway, so you should get sharp shots with a 50mm lens at 1/8s (I've managed 1/4s) and with a 200mm lens at 1/30s.

So expecting it to work at 1/2s or more is pushing it to say the least, especially at the longer focal lengths.

I find it very effective, but still need a tripod for a lot of what I do.

Wrong sub-forum, I guess, but I like the sound of a local User Group - I'd be up for it if it exists.
Well, several of us met up in St. Albans back in March, and that was a fun day out. The Yorkshire lot seem to manage it, so I don't see why we shouldn't either. It's just finding somewhere that's 'local' enough for everyone. Anyway, as you say, wrong sub-forum, so we'll perhaps carry on with this on the right one?
