Insects are usually handheld, whether using the 300mm (for larger things), or my 105mm Sigma. I don't have a monopod, but I nearly always have the tripod with me.

Just did a 4 stack shot of a moth .. handheld so not as steady as I would like and the flash is a bit harsh but even so ...

All I did was take 4 shots in quick succession while moving the camera back slightly and then loaded them into Helicoid software.

The aperture ring will have been moved from the 'A' position, and the menu option to allow the use of non-A lenses will not have been set. Get him to check the aperture ring.

Common problem.
Peter's note about the Tamron AD2 lens giving F-- occasionally is something I've experienced too, but very rarely. Someone else's tamron had it much worse than mine, and it turned out to be the AD2 mount, rather than the lens (unsurprisingly).

Where do the three lens mounts come from?

One quirk I understand to be connected with this is that I can't instinctively tell left from right; I can work it out, but have to concentrate/think about it. I've always been told it was because I had a different dominant eye and hand. Does thjis ring a bell with any of the other left-eye right-handers on here?

Geordie
It's also supposed to give more stops benefit than 'in body'.
I did a rough and ready test when I was at LCE Colchester before. The Sigma 150-500 I tried did seem to stabilise the image better than the in-body stabilisation. I handheld at 1/90s at 500mm, switching between lens and body stabilisation, and invariably the lens produced the sharper shot.
I didn't like the view though with it on, I found it would suddenly lurch to one side, presumably when the limit of the stabilisation was reached. I much prefer putting up with a slightly visibly shaky viewfinder image, and pressing the shutter when I know the subject is in the right spot. That may be something that improves with use though.
