K10D Not Recognising Lens

You did not give any detail about the SMC 70-200...
I suspect it is a manual focus lens, and does not have the proper connection to the camera to transfer lens information such as aperture etc. It will work fine, but you will have to use the camera in manual mode, as well as manual focus mode...

Sorry, I believe that it is this lens and does have auto focus etc

The aperture ring will have been moved from the 'A' position, and the menu option to allow the use of non-A lenses will not have been set. Get him to check the aperture ring.

My quick response was based on how many times the F-- shows up with my M 50mm f1.7...

You forgot to mention that it might not be that and instead the contacts might need cleaning. My manual focus Tamron lenses used with a PKA adaptor DO show indications of aperture or intermittently 'F--'.You did not give any detail about the SMC 70-200...

A quick wiggle of the lens seems to restore the f-stop info display or as suggested above a proper wipe of the contacts.

Common problem.
Peter's note about the Tamron AD2 lens giving F-- occasionally is something I've experienced too, but very rarely. Someone else's tamron had it much worse than mine, and it turned out to be the AD2 mount, rather than the lens (unsurprisingly).

The lens worked fine for a few days but now when he attaches it to the camera it won't take a shot and the "F" has the two dashes after it like it would with a manual lens. It still works fine with the kit lens.
Any ideas?
