This particular herd consists of 11, with a couple of younger ones.
I was not very far away from them, but I was shielded by a stone wall with a fence and hedge on top.
Focusing was accomplished through small gaps in the hedge/fence, and on occasion focus would shift to a part of the hedge or fence.
The 55-300 PLM was very fast to focus, but in this scenario the biggest plus point over my previous 55-300 DA was the silent focusing; I doubt if any of these would have been possible with the DA version, due to the focus hunting and noise made whilst trying to lock focus.
Challenging conditions, and a big thumbs up to the 55-300 PLM (body was K3).

RobL, thanks for the suggestion regarding the custom image setting, but this is set to normal.
I do suspect that they look slightly different due to the shooting conditions, i.e. fairly long exposures.
Usually I'm a handheld shooter, but this set was completely different to what and how I do things (usually stuck to F11 where as these were @ F16 mostly).
Here's a couple of JPG's straight out of the camera

For comparison, here's a set from the same location some years ago, all handheld link

K3 is a very good camera,
I wonder If it's the shooting parameters that need changing, working your way through the menu, might be worth checking, as this look is not at all what we are used to seeing from your shots.
You shooting raw or jpeg, if jpeg, what quality is selected ?
Again, I'm not knocking your shots, just feel they are a little off, compared to your usual style.
Derek
Previously I would take all shots handheld, so for example the ISO in this particular set would be high; again I don't know if this would make a difference?
Unfortunately I cannot post a RAW file here so that you could see what one looked like.
A few similar examples from a local wood, similar shooting conditions

The only difference to previous sets is the camera, first images I have posted with the K3.
Cheers all.

Well Adrian,
Every now and again a lens comes along that is frankly quite remarkable for the money; the 55/300 PLM is simply just that.
Do I am glad you are over the initial scare ‘cos now you will be very happy with this gem of a lens
Cheers

The lens has a position where it is shortened for more compact storage. Just click it out until it enters the place where zooming, and operation, can start. At least on Pentax Q lens does the same thing. It's intentional, not a fault.
Having taken a closer look, and what you say is correct, panic over, cue embarrassment
I'll take my place in the corner, wearing the Dunce's hat

Whilst the 55-300 PLM performed very well, one thing I`m still getting used to is the button to release the zoom, and this led to me missing some shots on this occasion.
