a 1.5x or 1.4x is ideal, just losing one stop. but it's hard to find one for pentax with a good optical design. F 1.7x seems really nice, but the price has gone up the roof.

Teleplus, (Kenko) 1.5x are very respectable IMHO, various clones on the Teleplus design exist.

I am not desperate to get one of those, but is on my wanted list. is the pentax branded ones still taking the lead? i prefer a X1.4 or 1.5, but they seem to be very rare and expensive, so maybe realistic to pocket a X2 teleconverter. which one is worth watching?

not FA 50/1.4, My list: F50/1.4> FA50/1.7> F50/1.7> FA50/1.4

I have nothing against FA50/1.4, but just the price does not meet the performance.
