This may be slightly over the top, but I thought it could be interesting to show a series of Northern Lights images from Christmas Eve. These were shot with the K5 + DA 12-24 with 15 seconds exposures and interval shooting at 20 seconds intervals. These 15 images are a series of what went on during five minutes of the Northern Lights display two nights ago:

If one scrolls down very quickly when viewing these (maybe in connection with a good glass of wine) this will almost become a timelapse...

I have been told recently that it is only the camera that renders the lights as green. Is this true?

By the way I always look forward to your Northern Lights photos this time of year.

Gwyn has already done a good job at answering your question, but I have to add some things. Firstly, the strength of a Northern Lights occurance can vary between not visible to the human eye, till very bright and highly visible light. When I shot the photos above the Aurora Forecast predicted KP indexes between 4 and 5, which is medium powerful. Kp index 9 is the most powerful. If you look at the photos above you can probably see that number 3 has the most powerful aurora, and number 4 the most subtle/weak light. When processing the RAW files from Northern Light photos, my aim is to try and make the aurora look like what I saw it in the dark night. Some people brighten up their Northern Light images to make them maybe more impressive or pleasing. Mine come out somewhat more dark, hopefully more true to what I saw.

Sometimes when the Northern Lights are very weak, maybe Kp index 1 or 2, they are not visible to the human eye. But the brilliant sensor in the K5 can capture them for us.

Great shot! I especially appreciate the reflection of the stars in the foreground water and the strong composition.

Merry Christmas

I suppose there is a certain amount of exitement not knowing what each poster will be looking like today and looking for the content among the random images!!
I have to admit that there is some excitement and fun with the iPad - random - image - feature. When clicking on an image in the gallery I never know what I will see. Yesterday I clicked on one of the landscape images in my own gallery, and a photo of the new 645Z medium format camera appeared

I had this on my iPad too. Personal avatar images were all swaped around. And random images were all over the place.

Talking to Dave Burleson, it is a problem with iOS when it upgrades from iOS7 to iOS8. It can be sorted by clearing the history and website data in Safari. (Settings>Safari>Clear history and website data).

Note though that if you have saved logins (using cookies) these will have to be re entered as they will also be lost.
Thank you for sharing your experience with the iPad random-image-syndrom This evening I installed the latest iPad OS update (8.1.2), and deleted all history and website data in Safari, but the problem still persists. Quite annoying, but at the same time there is some fun in randomness once it is accepted as a feature

On my iPad images from the gallery and front page of pentaxuser seem to live their own anarchistic life. They are all over the place. Gallery images swap places, etc. Is this a Mac/Safari browser thing, or is there something wrong with the coding of the new web site design?
