Thanks for the information - I will still be looking and commenting, but where and when I should. Sorry about using 'soz' - it's just a nice, cheeky way to say sorry between friends.

Just had a look at the entries - lots of stormy skies, some brilliant, some not so brilliant. I was hoping to see lots of original ideas, as I couldn't think of anything. I just love the little child with the face that is about to crack, what a moment to capture. Looking forward to the judging of this one - difficult job. I'm hoping to pick up some handy tips from the comments. So, good luck David (I think it's David), lots of helpful hints, pleeeeeeeeeeeease.

I tried to be clever but gave up and stuffed an 'approaching storm' image in. I knew I wouldn't have much time this week to consider alternatives as work is 'mad'. I bet that is probably the reason why there is little action here.

I have just received my copy of Digital Photo - and there is an in-depth article on taking portrait shots (babies, big-uns and location portrait shots). It includes setting up, lighting, and how to post-process for the best results - might be worth a quick scan at WH Smith.

Perhaps I should call it mirror shake - when the mirror flies up out of the way there is a risk that it shakes the camera a little and on a long exposure creates a blurred image.

So, with long exposures on a tripod where you're not in any rush you can have the mirror go up, then wait 3 seconds and then the shutter opens by which time you hope the camera is no longer shaking.

I did it because I could and was using a remote control to fire the shutter. You can also have a 2 second delay between pressing the shutter button manually and the shutter actually opening if you don't have a remote.

It seemed a sensible thing to do in the circumstances and the image is sharp!

Thanks for that - another piece of info to store away just in case.

Thanks for the info - don't want to sound silly - but what is mirror slap.

I love this forum - getting back to the image- so clear, well composed and the light interest is spot on. The best bit is the fragility of the crystal clear ice. Well done. Some statistics for us novices would help to improve our knowledge base - ta

Just for information.

I will judge the entries tomorrow between 7 and 10 am DK time. That should be the same as 6-9 am UK time.

Some stunning shots so far
I have just had another look at the entries - unbelieveable - aren't children wonderful!! I couldn't possibly judge this lot - nearly every one of them could be the winner - Good luck Nimitz
