Perhaps you could try the outdated theory of saving a stack of coin, and buying "old" but still fantastic Pentax glass for a fraction of the price of the new stuff. I've bought an A 50 f1.7 manual focus and a Takumar 135mm f2.5 lens on ebay for about 80 of your quids all up. Those old lenses are built like a tank, and quite often, can compete rather favourably against the modern plasticky lenses. (having said that, I'd swap those two for a 50-135 f2.8 in a heartbeat. Any takers?).
Regards
would you?

I had DA*50-135 and went exactly the other way... Sold it and kept 50/1.7 (F series) and got myself FA135/2.8. Both of them better than the DA* in just about every respect.
But... I sold them both to fund my 43 and 55/1.8... found 135 tad too long anyway. I'm keeping my eye out for 77/85. Maybe 100 we'll see

Generally the 1.7 versions are considered to be excellent.
Many like them better than their faster siblings.
I have 55/1.8 (which is optically the same as 50/1.7) skipped 50/1.4 and got myself 50/1.2

direct comparison?
up to f2.8 the slower version is sharper, from there they are the same. But 1.2 has better bokeh when stopped down (8blades vs 6)... oh well, I'm keeping both

Peter, I believe both versions are the same so it shouldn't matter

The difference is most likely the catalogue name one with SMC and the other with smc.
Thanks Stefan,

I know optically and cosmetically, performance wise both versions are the same.
I noticed the SMC vs smc but was wondering if this was only on box or on the lens itself.
Only reason for asking is I'd love to know which one I have... I'd love it to be the older

Never happened to me.
But for my primes I'm buying metal screw in hoods.

According to K mount page there are two different versions of K50/1.2 (not counting the gold version).
It states differences in labeling. Original version was made 75-77, second version 77-84 along M series lenses.
Picture provided is the same though.
Is the difference in lettering apparent on "beauty" ring or only on box/paperwork.
Is there any other way how to tell those two versions apart?

Thanks

BR
Peter

I think as a whole set it works great. But as others have said, it kind of "directionless". You can just about work out what is the common subject.
I like the PPing and colours on all of them, but I find the framing on some bit odd.

well, I wouldn't pick spectrum and west and cameras as good sampling shops.
a)
Spectrum are not very honest and reasonable guys IMO. They are VERY overpriced and tend to "prey" on people who don't know. I've been there few times and nearly every time I ended up walking out of the store angry... seriously those guys just try to rob the hell out of people (IMO). They used to have slogan: we won't be beaten on price. Well, just mention them prices from srs in watford and they'll send you to buy there...
other than that, yes, they are really well stocked, but I can't imagine them selling lot for those prices.
b)
west end cameras, well, at least the sales people are better (definitely one of them). They stopped stocking Pentax some time ago so I'm not too regularly in there, but pop in every now and then to check their second hand shelf. Honestly, most of those lenses they have there, have been on the same shelf for last 3/4 months....

my 2p

PS: other than that I agree. There is quite a buzz about Pentax these days. A lot of adverts, on tube, elevators, lifts, in shops and lot of compacts.
Future is bright.. future is... Pentax
