Chris, To me it looks more like a lack of contrast and perhaps some lost detail and lots of specular highlights (or close to it).
It may be how you saw it, but it is not necessarily how other people's eye want to see it. I for one, have hard time picking out a clear area of definition to lock onto.

Guess I need to post one. Just took this yesterday. Not really happy with it at all, but this is totally unprocessed from the camera (JPEG) using the K10D and a crappy-arsed Sigma 18-200 lens.

I do have the RAW file, and may try to bring out some sharpness, etc...

But that being said, I think it looks decent. I bet someone skilled could do a lot with the RAW file.

Oddly, I notice this little cat has awfully porcupine-like hair. I am quite unfamiliar with cats. So maybe the lions were just fine, contrary to my previous subjective post. I was at a pet photography class last night. This is one of my 'better' photos of this cat. Argh!

Personally I think the image looks overs harpened to the point of being unnatural. I'm not lion expert, subjectively speaking, but these guys look more like porcupines.
Other than that and the blobs of weed in their face, it is a fairly pleasing image.

I believe you're on ePHOTOzine. Have you looked at the Pentax gallery? Or done searches for photos taken with Pentax? Again, not sure what it is you're looking for, but there are a number of good photographers using Pentax there.

amoringello, I think you're refering to Chris's image. The original poster, alchemist, hasn't yet posted samples.
Ah Sorry! My mistake...
Then I am very interested to see what he is talking about.

This shot was not made only with available light.
Maybe something got set funny and you were not aware of the flash being on, but you can see the shadow generated from the flash. If not yours, perhaps someone nearby behind you taking a photo at the same instant?? (I've had it happen with lots of photographers and relatively slow shutter)

Anyway, via the reflection in the mirror you can see stark shadow behind the statues on the shelves, for example, but no shadow from your vantage point. A good indication that you are, or are very near, the light source.

Yes, they are in ghosts being captured by your camera because we all know that cameras can capture all sorts of electrical energy. Just aim it at your radio, cell phone or television and see what you get!!

The 'orbs' are in fact specs of dust reflecting your own flash. These are seen much more frequently by compact cameras or SLR using pop-up flash where the flash is closer to the lens. The light reflects back more directly than with a flash like the guy in back of the photo is using, and even less if the flash is totally off the camera and the light reflects at a greater angle to the lens.

Mine kept jamming inside for month. (never while extended and locked to the camera) With enough use it seems to have loosened up. Now it works fine every time.

All it does is keep your flash from slipping loose... at which point it may inadvertently hit the wrong pins. Dunno if that might cause damage on firing, but at the very least your flash may need to be repeatedly pushed back in place. (The locking ring isn't enough to hold it securely.
So you'll probably want to try to keep the pin if possible.

Figured I'd ask outside of the sticky thread, as requested.
Are there specific rules for the weekly competition?

Such as can we post more than once?
Any limits on number of posts? I already posted an entry, but if we're limited to one post I'll wait and do better on next week's.

Should we try to refrain from commenting on other people's entries during the week? Or would an outside thread for comments be acceptable? Not sure if your request for not commenting as just in that thread or for all comments in general. (I'm guessing no comments at all, since that affects your judgment?)

Anyway I like the idea. Should be fun. Hopefully I can get some more time to submit a proper entry.

Always wanted to try this sort of thing. A little short on time so its a bit rough, but for a first attempt I sorta like it.

Maybe a sheet of white paper, some tin foil, or other reflector thing-a-ma-jig could have helped to eliminate the shadows a bit??

Anyway, I like the color but (ignoring the first teaser image), I only like the DOF on the second image. (third from bottom). The rest seem a bit shallow and on one or two almost appear that you've focused on the wrong part of the food.

The leaf-sliced pear is a great touch!
