Question/comment -- Weekly Competition - The Number Six

Figured I'd ask outside of the sticky thread, as requested.
Are there specific rules for the weekly competition?

Such as can we post more than once?
Any limits on number of posts? I already posted an entry, but if we're limited to one post I'll wait and do better on next week's.

Should we try to refrain from commenting on other people's entries during the week? Or would an outside thread for comments be acceptable? Not sure if your request for not commenting as just in that thread or for all comments in general. (I'm guessing no comments at all, since that affects your judgment?)

Anyway I like the idea. Should be fun. Hopefully I can get some more time to submit a proper entry.

I think one entry per person, no comments on the images for the reason you've already stated, image size as defined at 1000 pixels, just like EPZ.

Otherwise, the brief is in the title of the competition and it's up to the photographer how they interpret it. We will have many judges with many different approached, but for me I'll be happy to take a very broad view of the task given.

After the judging, feel free to tell me how much you disagree, or even agree, with my choice and reasoning.

Any more questions, then this thread is the place.

Can I make a suggestion that the cut-off time for submitting photos be midnight on Sunday in future. With work and other commitments I find that is the only day I can actually get out and take pictures.

OK, fair comment, do we have any other comments on the timing of the competitions?

The advatage of the exisiting Saturday deadline is that the judging can be done at leisure on the Sunday. If done on a Monday then the results might be much later in the day.

OK, although it's a risky business explaining a thought process, and most competitions say "no corresp[ondence will be entered into" for that very reason. However, fools rush in, so here goes...

I found a six in the number plate and also two threes that make a six. I also wondered whether in binary code 110 meant six, but I don't know and if that were so then the image would IMHO require too much knowledge to be generally accessible. So there are sixes, and potentially more than at first obvious, but then we look at the composition and how the message of 6 relates to the image as a whole.

Such was the thought process. It is of course entirely possible that I have missed something, judges do all the time, if so I'd be interested to know what your take on it was.

How about as an alternative the next competion overlaps by a few days or a week with the last. That way the judge can be judging on a sunday, and the rest still have a full weekend to do entries. The winner would then be setting/judging the competition after next (As the next one has already started)

Well, I wanted to interpret the brief literally. It said "The Number 6", not the digit six, so I was thinking about ways to do that. I had very limited time last week, so was a bit stuck for ideas. I didn't have the right bits to set up the only idea I had, so I was close to giving up.

But when I saw a number 110 bus go past (110 is is indeed the number six, in binary), it jumped out at me, computer geek that I am. My original plan was to attempt a light trails thing, opening the shutter when it signalled to move, and leaving it open on B for a few seconds. But this would clearly have been imprudent, on a Friday night with drinkers milling around so I gave up on that. In the end, I took the photo, hand-held from inside the car, with no expectation that it would be in the least bit interesting.

When I had a look at it, though, there was just one redeeming feature that made me think it was worth submitting.

110 is the number six in binary - the language of computers. And the bus just happened to be parked outside a computer shop, and the reflection of its name is clearly visible in the shot. So the binary number 6, with the reflection (mirror-reversed) of the word "computers" saved the shot for me. I did consider cropping the number plate out, but that was the number 363, not the number six, so I left it in intentionally.

I agree with your comments. Just a bit of amusement for me, really. A photo like the back end of a bus, perhaps...

If you ever get bored with photography, compiling crosswords might appeal.

Strangely, I won a Mars bar once, at school, as 1st prize for compiling one in French. I haven't done any since, though, nor does it interest me.

I wasn't expecting, or even hoping to win this one, with that little snap. It's not a good photograph, I'm not claiming that it is. But if you intended your comment to be as disparaging of the ideas as it sounds, it's a little disappointing that there's so little room in composition for the offbeat. My apologies if I've misinterpreted you.

Worthy winner Tim, nice shot, enjoyed reading your assessment John too - its good to learn from other peoples perspective on a huge and subjective medium as photography...

It's been made a "sticky" so it's now top of the list.
