OK thanks very much Stefan, I will have a look at some daytime shots at high ISO using an ND filter and compare them on my monitor. I've never heard of mean noise eduction, could you explain it to me? Thanks again. I have NR on auto on the camera Ken, is that the best setting?

I guess it must be my monitor then. It's an LCD monitor, does anyone know how I can fix it? It's going to be difficult doing noise reduction and sharpening with it as it is.

What is dark frame subtraction? On my monitor the iso 800 shot appears to have much more noise. And thanks very much for taking the time to look at the pics and answer my question!

And here's a 100 percent crop from the panorama before editin, ISO 4oo, 4 secs, f8. Am i just expecting too much from the camera?

This is a 100 percent crop from an image taken at 800 iso, 1/25 of a sec, no pp. There seems a lot of noise and the longer the exposure, the worse it gets.

Shooting RAW. Here's a pic (3 pics stitched together) I took last night, 4 secs at ISO 200, f8. This is after applying noise reduction, it was much worse than this. there's also some pixellation about a third of the way in from the left hand side.
