DOF preview was the biggest joke ever..... most people
can't even see the bit that's in focus without a split
screen viewfinder.... so how can they see where it's
going in and out of focus

The Caps story is quite well known and it's ALL of the larger MB caps
that go and it was only the cheap caps that went, the more expensive
caps such as Rubycon (from whom the formula was stolen) never go.
One repairer has stated that he has never seen a motherboard with
faulty Rubycon caps on it.

The MB manufactures such as AOPEN that always used top Japanese caps
never had any problems. Abit had big problems along with DELL and Apple.

Abit were the first to start free repairs on MB's. If you look
at a box for a recent Abit MB it says something like Contains Top
Quality Solid Japanese Made Capacitors.

I was just pointing out that Apple don't always use the top components
available. Just noticed on that link to the firm that supply caps:

"It is recommended that you recap or replace your PSU (power supply unit) with a new one if it wasn't replaced already by the now expired Apple extended warranty. There are too many revision of these PSU's for me to effectively make kits for them, so if you choose to recap your PSU, you'll have to disassemble it and purchase the individual caps you need to rebuild it."

I've not heard much about PS's being affected.

I'm surprised they expired the Warranty considering it was
a manufacturing fault that they could be sued over. They only
started to repair the boards when they were threatened with
a Class Action Suite.

It's not a big job changing the caps on a MB I did it on a
Soltek board because it's the only one I've got that's still
got an ISA socket.

I don't use it nowdays, but I still have an AST Ascentia laptop from
1995 that has never given me any trouble in years of use. It has an
early Pentium and Windows 95 on it. Quite a clever machine even by
todays standards. Takes up to two slide out batteries for 6 hours
use. The batteries have 5 LEDS on them to show the power.
The HD, CD and floppy all slide out. I can't bring myself round to throwing it away

I also have a 3 year old Toshiba laptop that has never given me any
problems plus 3 desktops and the only problems with them have been
one Soundblaster Audigy 4 card died and a Soltek motherboard had to
have new caps. Some file problems with XP Pro on one m/c.

Managed to find this page about Apple's File Manager

http://www.squidoo.com/osxfinderreplacement

It doesn't sound any better than Windows and has a statement:

1. Wait until Apple 'FTFF'. 'FTFF' has become an industry 'buzz acronym' which stands for 'Fix the F---ing Finder'. Can Apple fix it? Will they fix it?

I don't know why there is always problems with File Managers seemingly
on all systems. Under DOS we had Xtree Gold v3 which was absolutely
brilliant. Several attempts were made by Xtree, Norton etc. to port
it over to Windows, but they never worked. With Xtree if you wanted
to see all the files in a branch you just pressed 'B' and it showed
them all. Want a document that has Pentax in it CTR S searched all the
branch and tagged the ones containing Pentax, Press V to view them
under Windows there's nothing remotely similar. I could never see any point in having a database you could just put everything in text files.

If Macs never break down how come a thread on Apples Discussion Board is 46 pages long:

Topic : eMac freezes randomly, open window turns into broken up jibber link

I'm not impressed with the set up of the board either..... no go to last or first post you have to step through the messages 10 at a time

There were also Macs that had to be recalled because they used cheap Chinese capacitors some reference to it on this page:

http://lowendmac.com/mail/0808mb/0812.html

So they don't use the top components

You can buy capacitor replacement kits from here: link

I'm certainly not trying to escalate any arguments just correct some
statements about Macs being 100% reliable compared to PC's. I use
PC's but there's a lot I don't like about them particularly the
keyboards and lately SATA connectors.

Both machines use the same components so I would expect reliability
to be about the same.

The good thing about PC's is that you probably have a spare board
that can be used to fix the problem straight away. Even old boards
usually work OK.

Why are we having this debate ?
Because to me the most important part of any computer is the file system and filemanager an area in which Windows is very poor.

Example in in XP copying files in Explorer you get a message that says 8 min. left then one saying 5 mins left, then one 30 secs left and then 6 mins left?????

And all I want to know is what type of Filemanager a Mac has?

Curry's discount codes usually can't be used on cameras and lenses.

What sort of Filemanager does a Mac have?

Windows haven't had a decent one since NT 4. I still use that on XP Pro and Win 7 but some bits such as configuring the toolbar won't work on the later versions of Windows. Still better than Explorer you can log as many drives as you want to separate Windows and have it launched with them logged as drop zones. It writes better to DVD-RAM disks as well.

Rock on.
No The Temptations I said it was rare

It's listed on this page, but they reissue albums and add and remove tracks making them hard to find.

The Four Tops version isn't as good. Just as the Four Tops version of Walk Away Renee wasn't a patch on the original by Left Banke
