You could come unstuck Howard with the In Camera SR turned on. It tries to adjust to frequency of any movement which is already being damped by the lens. It should be OK as long as things don't change suddenly, but the camera actually thinks it's heavily stabilized which it isn't.

Grebes on the nest aren't hard to get close to. They are when they are on the water and usually move away close to the center of the lake.

I once saw some nesting in a park, under some bushes about 4m from the public footpath, a man was sitting in a director's type chair about 3m away from them. He seemed to be guarding them from "Vincent the Vandal" because he had a flask by his side. He must have been a park employee. They do have some kind of duck care home in the park. Every so often he took out a compact camera and took a few flash shots of the Grebes.

They are possibly the same lens. Does the Vivitar SNo start with 37?

Not really a birding lens, but possibly OK for sports etc. at f/8 and high ISO. Bit difficult to hold steady.

That's interesting to know and is why they have such great depth.
It's rare for me locally to get that close to any BIF 300mm is
usually still a bit short.
