Weekly Competition # 60

Well, I seem to recall it was an idea well recieved in July when I had it! I sent a suggestion to the powers-that-be, as follows:

With the new competition gallery, we obviously have a 'comments' option for each image, which John Riley used for his summing up of each entry in his test comp. This was well received, as we can now see what image the comments relate to much easier.

However, it was noted that as many judges like to critique throughout the week, rather than trying to do it all in one go, it would now mean a lot of cutting and pasting to get the comments onto the respective photo.

I made the suggestion that it would be good if the judge could enter comments at any time whilst the competition was open, but that these comments wouldn't be visible to anyone else until the judge 'published the results'.

I'm aware that there is a public/private type of field associated with comments, in these reports at least, so wondered if this could be used? So all the comments would be private to the judge (the person who would start the thread/competition) until they 'published results' (made the comments public).

There seemed to be a general concensus that this was a good idea, it's not just me giving you extra work.

Possible/not possible?

Actually, it's just senility.

But if RH reckons it's possible, now is the time for a community-led enhancement to be activated, along with with a community-led priority list, where this is at the top.

While I do agree to the criticism appearing in this thread, I elect to make an entry in the next competition, hoping that the problems will be sorted out and the judge(s) starts making comments again.

After all, the reason I, for one, make an entry, is to have my picture evaluated by someone else.

I would, however, prefer to have the competition back in its old form (pre #55).

For those who haven't visited the gallery recently, judge's comments are now appearing.

I have been following this thread with some interest as I do like the competition format. I had high hopes for the new format and still do. However, I have not been entering recently. This is for one of two reasons: 1) When I have I have found the competition closed, somewhat anoying when I have just spent an hour playing with cuvres to get the look I want! 2) the subjects have been a little narrow for me and where I have a photo that fits it is not good enough.

I enter competitions as I want to improve and seeing how others interpret the brief is good, also the comments are key.

I will be entering this competion and ensuring I get in early to ensure that the comp has not closed!

Would it be possible to entrants as commended, highly commended, 2nd and 3rd on the Gallary rather than just the comment. That way I can skip to the pictures that the guest judge rated top and see why these hit the spot for the judge.

As everyone else here (participating in this thread) I like to think with, and form a opinion about suggestions made by fellow posters.
But could you please explain what you mean exactly in the quote above:

We have a Dutchman at ADAPS, very knowledgable too. I recently lent him a book all about Pentax M series cameras - written in Dutch.

Funnily enough most of the technical stuff is understandable, even though I don't speak or read Dutch.

I totally agree, beakynet. But then it would also be much easier if the ranking list is posted directly under the thumbnail page rather than under each individual picture.

I fail to understand why some people prefer comments to appear under each picture.

For me it's so I can read the comment whilst looking at the picture, rather than jumping back and forth in the thread, trying to find the picture the judge is referring to.

What I mean is an easy way from the main gallary screen for the competition to not only identify who won (as is currently presented) but to also see who came 2nd, 3rd etc. This might be achieved by a colour border on the images or a sub-note nder the pictures.
