I now have just about all the quality lenses I've ever wanted. A nice range of SMC-A primes. A few M primes, a couple of Zeiss Jenas, and my beloved Vivitar Series 1 Varifocal. Two or three AF lenses, too. I have kicked my LBA habit... For expensive lenses, anyway!
Now I am going in the oposite direction. From this day forth, I will not spend any more than 10 on a lens.

There are millions of cheap 'no name' lenses out there. From the 1960s up until Autofocus SLRs became popular, there were countless independent lens brands. Retailers and distributors often has lenses made with their name on them. These lenses had a couple of things in common. They were all made by a few Japanese optical companies, and they were all cheap. Much cheaper than camera makers own lenses.
Most of these cheap and cheerful lenses were 28, 35, and 135mm focal lengths, because these were thought the most popular and useful. They have names like, Prinzflex, Photax, Optomax, Hanimex, Cimko, Soligor and many, many others. Most were pretty average in quality. Some were quite good, and a few were extremely good... As good as the very expensive camera makers own lenses.

Ebay is heaving with these 'no name' cheapies. There are probably enough 135mm ones out there to fill the Albert Hall.

I bought two such lenses last week. A Photax Paragon 135mm and a Hanimex 28mm. Both M42 screw fitting. The Hanimex was 8, the Photax 6.60... And included a genuine Pentax M42 Bayonet adapter!

Here they are...

Later, I will upload some test shots from each of them.
This could be a fun project. - Join the Ten quid lens club - Only 3 Rules.

1. The lens must not have cost more than ten pounds, excluding delivery.
2. It must be a 'No name' cheapie.
3. All images of the lens, and those taken with the lens, must be made on a Pentax camera.

Let's see if we can find any undiscovered gems!

When you say "no name" does that exclude the likes of Sigma, Tamron, Tokina and Vivitar

Yes, excluding those. Although they are independent makers, they made higher quality lenses (under their own name, at least). Certainly a cut above the ones I mean.

Its a proven medical fact that LBA is incurable, far in the future when medical science has cured everything else the only charity shops on the high street will be the LBA Research Society, there will be drop in centres and LBA annonymous, as more things become automated and people have much more time and disposable income the addiction will become worse until it is eventually a worldwide pandemic, exacerbated by the shortage of lenses.

The Paragon and Soligor do. The Takumar doesn't qualify. - Even if it cost less than a tenner.

What's wrong with the Spotty. Maybe I got what it needs.

The Photax is an unusual lens. Very short for a 135mm. It is very well made, being all metal. There is no plastic on it, anywhere. It's heavy!
The minimum focus distance is 8 feet. Not very good, as most 135s usually focus down to about 5 feet. The focus ring rotates only about 40 degrees, from minimum focus to infinity.
Optically, It's not bad at all. Certainly much better than the bloody awful 135 Takumar bayonet, I have. Even wide open, it's pretty good.

The Hanimex is not as good. - A bit of a disappointment, really. I had expected it to be better than the Photax, being newer and multi-coated.
Wide open, it is very soft. A bit better when stopped down.

I wondered why the staff laughed at me when I wanted to buy GBP5000 at Travelex in Perth and walked in without a wheel barrow full of AUS$.

I briefly owned a Hanimex 135mm f2.8 (acquired from eBay of course), and it was dreadful. That put me off 10 lenses I have to say - though I do own a couple of (not quite that cheap) M42 lenses which get a run if I'm feeling daft

I used to have 5 Centon 50mm f1.7 which I bought when I didn't know any better. I always thought it was surprisingly good, but then only a few months ago I found out from Hefty that it was a Chinese copy of the Pentax 50 1.7.
