Yes, indeed Tim. I suspect that many of these 'No name' cheapies, are actually copies of lenses that were also sold under better known names. Some even as camera makers own lenses, like your Centon.

It certainly does count. Tony!

And thats an excellent bargain, you got there. That Prinzflex looks good, especially as you degraded the image quality a bit, by sticking a teleconverter between it, and the film.

Hi ,do the two pentacons, that I got with a proper Pentax adapter 15or 20years ago in Lancaster for I think 15 quid count? I was'nt very impressed with them then, but I think that was operator error mostly. Any tips to get the most out of these? ... Jeff

Oh no!. No no no! - These are way too good. They qualify on price (7.50 each) but not on obscurity of name or quality. I'm a fan of Pentacon lenses. I have a couple of the 50mm f1.8s seen above. I use one for photographing everything I put on ebay. They are sharp and focus very close. These Pentacon lenses are under regarded. In fact, I'd say that the 50mm was as good as any Pentax standard prime.

Enjoy using them... And try again!

Here are some of the lenses brands that qualify for entry... As long as they cost under a tenner.

Aico, Astron, Derek Gardner, Greens, Dollonds, Sands Hunter, Hanimex, Hanimar, Optomax, Helios, Prinzflex, Zodel, Paragon, Panagor, Panomar, Cimko, Soligor, Beroflex. Inter City, Phago. - And there are probably dozens more!

All these lenses were probably made by the same handful of Japanese optical companies. Who made what, is largely unknown.
If you have any of the above, or any others that fit the bill... Please add them here, with a picture.

To be fair, only the 135mm Helioses should qualify (made by a Japanese company which licensed the Helios brand - I read Cosina somewhere but don't take that as gospel). The others (44 series and I think my 77-M-4 as well) are Zeiss Biotar clones made in the USSR.

Yes, thats right. I meant the Japanese made ones from the 1980s. The 135 is quite common. Funnily enough, I got one on ebay yesterday, with a stuck iris, for 99p. You'll see it here as soon as it arrives. I think there were 28mm and 200mm versions, too.

Here is an Optomax 35mm f2.8. 4.99 from my favourite ebay seller.

Like all lenses of this period, It is all metal and very well screwed together. Image quality is quite good. - The best so far, in my rapidly growing sub ten quid lens collection.
The 99p Helios arrived a couple of days ago, and is now in pieces on my desk. Iris freed, but it's a bugger to get back together again.
Today's bargain was a 50p Hanimar 135mm T2 Mount. You'll see that, shortly.

I picked up a Miranda 70-200 F4 zoom in pristine condition from a camera fair in Guildford not long back - some initial tests showed it was not bad at all, though I am skeptical if it really is a constant F4 (it could be - it has a 58mm filter thread - but exposure does seem to change when zooming against an evenly lit plain wall)

It is in the UK at the moment so I cant do any further tests or post any pictures - as is the 28 2.8 Soligor (I think) on which I wasted a fiver and which was absolutely awful!

OK, this one's not a 'no name'brand, but I picked up a Pentax-A 35-105 f3.5 lens on ebay for $3aud + $8aud postage from Brisbane to Newcastle, NSW. That's about 7 quid, for you fine English gents. The lens was advertised as 'Rough'condition, with fungus issues. I unscrewed the end elements, and cleaned the fungus off, and within five minutes, had a lens worth twenty times the purchase price. That lens has remained on my K100D Super for the last month, as the results are superb.
