But that is my other point, why do they feel the need to do this ... what good does it do, I don't want to know why someone who has posted 24 times in as many months feels the need to change brands ... just go.

read how many posts I've made over a dozen years, and remember I was a fanboy that defended the brand in many of those posts.
there's an old saying...
you can tell a ship is taking on water when you see the rats abandoning ship.... but you'll know for sure it's going down when you see the crew heading for the lifeboats....

Actually equipment wasnt my original question. Though I admit it is difficult to seperate the issues.. My question was in real terms. "How do we stop people leaving the brand" or How do we attract younger users to what is at present. Wether we like it or not an inferior brand.. ?

You only need to look at our site here.. I think it mirrors what is happening.. We have our older die hard users. That have always been Pentax users and defend the brand. To be admired.
I have seen quite a number of users in my time here leave the site because they have for whatever reason sold up and defected to other brands... But they didnt give up photography. Very little newcomers younger users to the site. Most K1 users here were already Pentax users. Dont see many KP users..

I was referring to the OP who has had a Pentax camera for 2 years and made 24 posts in that time. To be honest Don I am surprised it has taken you this long to jump over to Sony, I would have bet on you doing it years ago.

The thing about Autistic people is we are resistant to change. Very resistant. The thing about being an autistic savant is... eventually that big IQ wins every struggle and I wind up following the most logical path, no matter how much I'd rather not.
I saw the path long long ago, was loathe to take it until ultimately forced to do so.
after making the investment in aps-c gear, if Pentax wanted me to make the switch to FF and buy duplicate focal lengths all over again, they should have made sure the FF system checked all the boxes needed, because I'd have to be insane to buy FF pro lenses to replace all my aps-c lenses then buy the same lenses again in the different brand and mount to shoot video... I can't afford that... jumping back to FF means I bought the camera system that is everything I wished the k-01 could have been.

still.. I'm a little sentimental...

As long as we all remain civil there's no reason not to have a discussion, it's only pointless in the sense that there's no answer to this one.

People will and indeed should buy the kit that is most suitable for the sort of work they want to undertake. Those who want to move to another marque don't need to feel that they should justify what they are doing.

On another track, looking at all the cameras and lenses heading our way across all marques it seems that the order of the day is full frame!

Tell me about it, my son is autistic (amongst other things) and it can be an absolute nightmare at times, I often wonder what's going on in his head. It's a good thing we love him so much I guess but it just goes to show there are things out in in the world that are a lot more important than the choice of a camera.

On a lighter note, adapter looks good, I ordered something similar for my Canon M5 but not quite so fancy.

I love doing photography with my Pentax DSLRs and 35mm and medium format film cameras. When I want to shoot video, of a family occasion or a music concert, I use my iPhone 8 plus The 4K video output of the iPhone 8 plus is surprisingly good for such a tiny device. But then I am no video professional, I only shoot video for fun

iPhones and GoPros etc are really good for video where you want everything in focus. I used mine a lot whilst travelling for video and 'non important stills' for sharing. 4k has been standard on modern devices for a while now but resolution is just one part of the equation, much like megapixels of a stills image isn't everything. In video terms the bitrate/quality of the video is equally as important.

You wouldn't take all your photos on a cellphone though, so a DSLR/larger sensor device with interchangeable lenses still has it's place for stills. The same goes for video too, where you simply can't get a large sensor look from a cellphone only. As Nigel mentioned above, we have interchangeable lens bodies for stills photography and it's cool to be able to use our DSLR bodies and lens collection for video as well. Video has been around on Pentax DSLRs for 10 years or so now, so this isn't new, but their video quality hasn't been upped significantly since 2012 is all.

How much longer do we have to put up with this troll..... Every single post he moans about Pentax who aren't a video company (confirmed by an exec). He just repeats the same moans parrot fashion. Most forums won't allow continual moans about the same thing..... We all know about it from the first moan.

Video is now very specialised. Even if Pentax were to include it he would still moan purely because it doesn't really work and most pros prefer manual focus video lenses anyway.

The two top still/video companies are Panasonic and Fuji. The two top cameras are far from perfect. AF in video is a bit of a joke. This clip starts at the point where a pro video cameraman and highly respected reviewer shown how the AF tracks a face. Note the troll is asking for eye AF........ it's not even available on the two top cams.

I hate having to reply to trolls and this is certainly not meant to be directed at Don who I will miss. He's been a top contributor here for years. Looking around it looks like running two systems is the way to go.

Don you might find this interesting. For wedding stills this girl uses Canon 5D 1V + Sony A7III (for low light) with Canon lenses via an adapter. Her other videos are also good.

Algi, please don't call people names, that really does not help at all. I don't want to have to close this thread, but it seems to have run its course and if it's just descending into personalities then it will have to stop.

my film making kit, for personal projects or low budget projects includes:
iPhone and gimbal
Go-pro and assorted riggings.
Sony a7III (new since I'm upgraded to 4k across the board this replaces the k3's 1080). with gimbal
Sony HDR nx80 (my old sr12 for 1080)
k3 for 4k time lapses and stills.
any of these cams will make fine b-roll shots on a pro project in a pinch but I rent when I have bigger budget projects. it's the only way to stay current..
and what does all the 4K equipment I use have in common?
They all can shoot decent stills and decent video equally well (k3 only does 4k timeleapses) .... even a screen grab from my nx80 with a little photoshop up res can pass for a decent 8x10 or smaller print.
people seem to forget that CMYK printing presses printing those lovely photo magazines were only capable of resolving approx 2k images for those cover shots.

So (stop me if you've heard this one) An old man walks into his doctors office and says "Doc, it hurts every time I twist my arm this way... What do you recommend?"
Doctor replies "Stop twisting your arm that way"

A woman on a dating site says "All the men here are just after one thing, sex, then they never call you back"...
someone replies back "Who said you had to have sex them all?"

you see where I'm going with this right?

This sounds like Donald Trump naming everybody with different opinions, Rocketman etc.
Please keep it civil. It's bringing a toxicity to this forum that nobody likes.

Algernon wrote:

Not really, every other manufacturer has upped their game, and it's just a natural improvement of the offering over time.
This conversation is about why people would move from a DSLR to a mirrorless camera though, so it's not all about video.

Algernon wrote:

Pentax does include video, and has done for 10 years now.
I'd like to see them improve their offering, which stagnated somewhat in 2012.
Nigel put this well previously.

Algernon wrote:

All companies offer better video than Pentax.
You don't have to jump to extremes by saying those are the only two options.
One doesn't jump straight to a 645Z just because they're not happy with their point and shoot.

Algernon wrote:

Yes I'd love Eye AF, and would want it primarily for stills portraits.

Algernon wrote:

I don't think people are saying that as much any more.
There are now cameras that take sufficient stills and video to satisfy both requirements, for a lot of users.
The aggressive pricing of the recent A7iii is what's attracting a lot of users who were sitting on the fence I suspect.

On a side note, how are people able to comment on other brands and specific cameras here?
I've had posts removed previously for doing just that.
