Maybe it fits in with the way people market in Japan, the rest of Tokyo certainly looks colourful enough.

The serious amongst us can buy black. Some wedding photographers might buy white (I've considered it for that purpose) and red and blue might just be fun colours.

Time will tell, but there is a school of thought that says that any publicity is good publicity....

Hmm. I can see that for some people here, the only acceptable colour for a "serious" camera is black. Fine. If you want a black one, then all well and good. On the other hand, is that a good reason not to make alternatives?

If I was buying one of these, I would almost certainly have a black one,but I would not for one second presume to deny those who would prefer another colour.

I have to say that the picture that Mike P posted appeals to my sense of fun.

In times past, all engineering had to be strictly Bauhaus, but that has changed.

The obvious example that springs to mind is Richard Dyson's vacuum cleaners. Until they appeared on the scene, you could have any colour from mushroom to grey. Not only had he produced quite a clever piece of engineering, but he had also played the aesthetics card.

The one group of people I can see havinga legitimate gripe is the dealers who have to stock the different variations.

Going back to the Dawn of Time, many box cameras were made in alternative colours. We only became stuffy about colours much later!

They won't have to. They'll stock the two standard colours (black/black, white/black) and probably a display model in an eyecatching scheme (the fuschia pink/yellow would stop an elephant in its tracks); then they'd have some sort of sales aid - either printed brochure/charts or an interactive kiosk solution.

People will be able to select their own combinations and those will be downloaded to the factory database for production. Once built they'll be shipped to the retailer for onward delivery / collection.

Pretty much the same system BMW use down at Cowley to build MINIs and it seems to work quite well - and we must be talking thousands of possible combinations there - not 100

Our friends at SRS are offering four options. They must either be intending to stock them or relying on Pentax for a fairly short lead time.

One way or another someone is going to have a fair cupboardful, even with modern computer aided manufacturing.

Jacobs have said that they will only stock the Black, however, if you want another colour they will order for you.

The market outside Japan is different though, we only get the choice of four colours. The same two "standard" colours will be stocked but with the red and blue held in some numbers by Pentax UK to send on to the retailers who get orders for them.

I don't think the red and blue models will linger long - if at all - in shops.

We'll find out soon enough though - there could be a massive influx of new people around these parts in the not-too-distant future

If I were to buy one, it would almost certainly be black (since silver is not available in the UK) but I think that it is a great idea to give people the choice of brightly coloured models

The suggested RRP from Pentax for the Pentax K-m DSLR is £399 including the 18-55mm DA-L lens or £499 for a two lens kit which includes both new lenses, the 18-55mm and 50-200mm DA-L lenses

This was on the press release that I found when I was looking to buy my K-m. They then offer=d a £30 cash back

I got cash back on my K200d, it took the sting out of buying a new camera.

£100 seems a logical start on the new model, seeing the list price is so high.

Hefty, if I was to buy one I'd certainly look at the blue one. It would make it easier to distinguish in the bag of black bodies!

My university shop accidentally ordered a batch of branded hoodies in flouresant green. They sold out in 2 days and now they stock this outlandish colour as standard.

Sometimes people will buy the strangest things.

We all here have cameras, these are entry level DSLR's that I would assume take the place of "happy Snappy" cameras and mobile phone cameras, look at all the pretty colours that are available in those items! It could catch on, not for me though
