Pentax K-x

I was reading some mobile phone instructions and it clearly said "do not paint this phone" and I wondered who would possibly want to paint a phone.

Then I noticed that one of my daughter's friends had indeed just painted her phone. So maybe the idea that someone would paint a camera isn't beyond the bounds of possibility either....

Perhaps your dealer painted a black one because he couldn't get hold of the real thing? The ones I've seen were moulded in high-quality white plastic - no paint involved.

As the only difference between the black and white bodies is the dye added before the plastic injection process it's fair to say the quality is absolutely identical in every other respect.

I once painted a TV set (before anyone says it, no not the screen) to blend in with my room decor - didn't actually look too bad.

Weather and dust sealing is pretty important to me
Still I think the K-x looks a superb package even though I wouldn't get one myself for that very reason.

I once painted my b&w TV red, just so I could tell people I had a colour telly

my daughter did a nice job on her phone with nail polish...

but wouldn't it make more sense to design the camera with snap on panels that users could then buy "skins" or "Armor" peices to customise it with? don't like black? order some red panels and maybe some gold grip pads... and sparkly gemstones too...
let the gaudiness commence!

It will come, give it a generation or two.

Don't forget the K-x is essentially a K-m but with a new sensor, processor and AF system - everything else is the same and that includes the body shell. To have given "snap-on" panels in this model would have meant re-engineering the largest single part of the camera and the costs (new moulds, etc) would have added quite a premium to the price.

The way Pentax have gone about this upgrade is a stroke of genius - it ticks all (most of?) the right boxes for marketing purposes while at the same time costing a fraction of the design/production costs of a wholly new camera. Clever Pentax!

Pentax's President of US Operations Ned Bunnell said that the next camera to be released by Pentax will be the 645D in early 2010.

I handled a white K-m and, as Hefty says, the finish was good, the colour being in the plastic not sprayed on.

As for Clip on panels.

Maybe somebody at Pentax will take note.

I'd also like the next new body moulding to have provision for an adjustable rear screen, allowing it to be tilted for high/low use.

As for the K-m/K-x using the same moulds, that's a good thing in my view as it helps keep development and production costs down. Who knows, Pentax could revive the older moulds and do Ltd bodies from the *ist range with 12/14 meg sensors!

Hmmm. Better start saving now then. :
