Seems to be conflicting information on the web about a K50 replacement and whether the K-S2 is that replacement. I suppose with the FF camera rumoured to be around the £1500-1600 mark when it arrives and the K3 II around £1100, there's room for another camera in the £700-800 range. Perhaps using the current K3 tech.
Its just great that Ricoh have got behind the Pentax brand in such a big way. They just need to beef up the marketing department. Get these cameras noticed.

Ahem... My sarcastic Bent aside, I think it's very good that they have re-used the K5II Focus system with -3 EV capability, pretty darned good for a body that'll end up selling for under five hundred quid pretty soon, got to admire Ricoh for that, a super compact weathersealed DSLR with a 100% viewfinder and autofocus in near darkness, all for less than a Monkey...

It seems to me that as a sweeping generalism that most people who buy entry or mid-level DSLRs do not really understand much about them. I wouldn't apply that to Pentax users who are more clued up, makes sense for the users of a minority brand who recognise more than reputation. There is in my view a widespread automatic assumption amongst the uninitiated that Canon and Nikon are the best. I also think that two of the headline features that are high on most people's lists are mp count and autofocus, most easily understood by the number of autofocus points. 20mp is fine. However, 11 af points I don't think are enough - that is entry level. My K5 has 11 which is fine more most situations but actually I'd want a few more - 15 would do me. I think the K-S2 won't be as competitive as it should be because of this, otherwise it looks fantastic.

I had read somwhere Adrian, that the original Spec (Rumoured) was a dumbed down version of the K3 meter and focus, a 29,000 zone RGB colour meter and fifteen focus points as you suggest, they are the only slight let downs in otherwise a fabulously well specced camera, I would however not have ever expected to see minus EV3 focus capability on a body at this price. With a long sigh, I also cannot disagree with you on the the perceptions of the majority, having recently had an encounter with someone at a very wet/rainy/stormy buttermere shooting a Canon 5D MkIII and put an abrupt end to his willy waving contest, after he said but your'e a pro that means you must shoot Canikon? How could you produce work of decent quality if you don't shoot Canikon? You should get one of these (5DMkIII and 24-105mm F4 USM)! Anything else is just not up to the job, I have no idea how yours could still be working in this rain? With that I stuck my K3 with the 17-70 SDM (Yes the 17-70 SDM in there)! :arrow:




Took it back out after a few seconds and then took the shot above with it (Must admit I had a sweat on because the 17-70 ain't sealed but I have always suspected that it sort of was!), and said "now you"! He looked on pretty incredulous then turned away and stormed off, saying "Pentax users huh, your all amateurs and a bunch of mad B@$^$£ds"

Digressing over, K-S2 Looks like a winner to me, the more I look the more my wallet starts to twitch...

For me I'd settle for 11 focus points in exchange for -3EV. Howver, this is up against the Nikon D5300 for instance with 39 autofocus points. SRS list the key features of the D5300 as i) 24mp and ii) 39 AF points. I think there is a vast market of buyers preconditioned into Canikon who will look no further than that, I suspect many won't know what -3ev means.

I was super impressed by the -3ev, and must go and look a that the k-30 offered.
That and no AA filter really puts features that were previously in high end spec bodies within reach for me.

The nuts and bolts internals though haven't changed much, as in very slightly less burst rate. I presume the same number of autofocus points etc, but once again pull have to check this.

Yep k-30 from years ago now:
11 AF points, 9 of which are cross-type (sensitive to vertical, as well as horizontal edges)
(Can't find a mention of the ev rating on the k-30 autofocus?)
920,000 dot LCD etc
6 fps burst

I've been amused to see so many comments on forums etc from k-30 owners evaluating this as their next purchase. We all appear to be wondering if this is the k-50 upgrade, or an upgrade to what must be the shortest production run ever of a product (k-s1) before it got an upgrade , and that a separate revised k-30/50 and eventually k-3 are potentially coming also?

I'd read that the K-S models were an additional aside from the usual range. perhaps Ricoh have changed their mind in a generally struggling market where even Nikon admit their sales are well down.

I'm delighted with my new K3 at £599 and the flip screen is the only nicety I might have liked having used one years ago on my bridge Konica Minolta A200 (but it did have an aweful electronic viewfinder) . Wifi has no interest to me any more than built in GPS, NFC etc.
There is no doubt that Ricoh are offering a lot for the money with this new camera despite the minor step backs on some features.

K30: EV -1 to 18 (ISO 100) Had to download the manual to find it!

The K30 doesn't have any f/2.8 AF points. I assume the K-S2 will have if it's the same as the K-5ii

The K-S2 will be useless without a cord release? I'm considering removing the shutter wire from a release so that it just AF's for CIF testing with a bellows.

If it has IR is it just in front like previous budget lines.
