Aside from the visual aesthetics, some of the designs of the 70s and 80s are still pretty unbeaten when it comes to simple and intuitive controls, and ergonomics. That's why they're still enjoyable to use and a welcome break from more complex menu-driven digital cameras. I suspect that's also partly why the X100 and X-Pro1 appeal to enthusiasts looking to recreate that experience. As well as the nostalgia thing.
I'm sure you have a point. However, I was distinctly unimpressed with the handling of the X100, which I think is a direct result of the slim, retro body. The hand grip of (most) contemporary DSLRs is surely more functional than the old style flat bodies.

Re. styling - I think that whoever made the point (about 20 pages or more back - I don't fancy searching to see who:shock that praising the K5 for its good looks compared to a K-01 is actually quite ridiculous - at least from the perspective of the non-camera enthusiast. Our (ethusiasts) response to a DSLR is probably conditioned by our knowledge of its functions and also by our (subconscious) awareness of the historical evolution of this type of camera. But looked at rationally most, if not all, DSLRs are quite ugly, bumpy lumps of plastic and metal, beside which the K-01 (chimney, boxy top, garish buttons and all) is a model of elegance. This is certainly my wife's point of view.

Don't know if this has already been noted. The K-01 seems to get a reasonable review in Amateur Photographer this week

I'll give you something AP has an on line pole rating the look of the K-01. At the moment 27% of the votes give it 0 out of 5 for looks.

Which means 73% don't think it looks hideous

only 16% voted 5/5 so 84% do think it's hideous.

OMG OMG OMG!!! the Pentax mirrorless is too thick! keeping the k-mount means you lose the benefits of mirrorless which is thinner smaller cameras!
Says the people that want a camera that fits in their shirt pockets.
Morons forgot they need a lens, though...
The 16mm pancake would barely stick out more than the K01 grip, and makes the Nex cameras very portable. The Nex also acts as a digital back for just about any lens ever made and has a tilting screen, allowing it to be used as a discrete, tlr type camera - that would have been useful on the K01.

Problem is that with the NEX the 16mm is the only pancake you can get - far as I know - and it is neither a very good lens nor a terribly useful focal length.

What would a Nex-sized camera with a k-mount adapter + lens look like?
I think the point is that if you want a thin mirrorless camera and do not need k-mount there are a lot of alternatives out there.

Besides,I have always thought that the Nex with a zoom attached looks ridiculous, but that is a personal view of course.

All well and good to compare the K-01 to another system with major drawbacks. I don't use Sony precisely because of the lack of small lenses. But MFT, on the other hand, has a full system of rather excellent glass across every possible mount. You can add and use K-mount lenses as you wish.

Compare the K-01 to the new OM-D system and weep.

They bodies are the same width. The E-M5 protrudes higher for the EVF, as it should for ergonomics. Of course the K-01 lacks this completely. Meanwhile the K-01 is 17mm thicker and still has a crippled lens mount, something that has never bothered Olympus. Add in weather-sealing, tilt flash, angle LCD, dual controls, optional grip, etc. Absolutely no comparison.

Which will be my last word on that. Let's see what Pentax does next. They're already three years behind the competition. And counting.

OM-D to K-01 isn't really a fair comparison... the K-01 isn't trying to be what the OM-D is, and is significantly cheaper. I'm intrigued by the MFT cameras but I'm not prepared to sacrifice even a little IQ (and DOF) for a smaller body, especially in a £999.99 camera. A cheap Olympus-Pen makes sense though, as an alternative to a quality compact camera.
