Pentax K-01

Aside from the visual aesthetics, some of the designs of the 70s and 80s are still pretty unbeaten when it comes to simple and intuitive controls, and ergonomics. That's why they're still enjoyable to use and a welcome break from more complex menu-driven digital cameras. I suspect that's also partly why the X100 and X-Pro1 appeal to enthusiasts looking to recreate that experience. As well as the nostalgia thing.

Don, I wear glasses for reading and while typing this. When out and about I don't need them to drive or read shop signs etc. So my cameras are set to match my eyesight. I very rarely pixel peep as I don't use preview.

For me, to use a rear screen means wearing glasses and then either looking over the top of them or removing them to see the rest of the world.

An optical viewfinder is ideal for me. Screens are a hassle. I also used the viewfinder on my video cameras and not a screen.

But others may love it to death.

Best regards
Yes - exactly! This is the point.

There's no doubts about it, 99% of people are perfectly comfortable using a screen.

There's a lot of doubt about it to 99% of people who just wear glasses for close up. They will have to take them out in the field with them and keep taking them on and off. People don't seem to understand it's not the same as a permanent glasses wearer popping their's up. We don't wear them for anything else and will walk off of cliffs if we walk around in reading glasses!

With photography, being short-sighted is arguably more convenient. It means rear screens are not a problem.

The thing that manufacturers don't understand about viewfinders is that they have dioptre adjustment. There are 20 million people over 50 in the UK and they hold 80% of the wealth. The majority of these wear reading glasses like me. This means you have to put on glasses every time you want to take a photo with an LCD screen whereas the viewfinder can be dioptre corrected to negate this. So in my opinion this makes the camera an unlikely purchase for a massive number of people.
Dave
Absolutely right, I really like the specification and design of the K-01, specially in yellow, but it is of no use to me without a viewfinder. The LCD screen requires too much faffing about with glasses. Such a pity, it IS a lovely modern camera, a future design classic, and I am sure will offer excellent image quality.
I think it was Don that shot down my get-rich-quick business idea by telling me this solves that issue : link

So it solves the problem by adding to the cost and making a compact camera stick out more at the back than a DSLR does at the front!!
At least the people who DO wear reading glasses seem to agree. It looks great and if I could see what I was taking a picture of I would love one!

Can't you have your glasses on a chain?

Alternatively, dSLRs with dioptre adjustment are available, presumably including the one you already own.

No worries, the K-01 couldn't be called compact by any stretch of the imagination anyway

I saw on another forum, somebody referring to the k-01 as a digital back with k-mount.
Seems like a great way to look at it. No?

I wonder if any Designer anywhere in the world will ever again
be willing to do work for Pentax after all the stick that this
camera's had so far without anyone actually using it
Half Man... Half Pentax ... Half Cucumber

Pentax K-1 + K-5 and some other stuff

I thought Pentax designers were doing just fine before. Buttons in the right places, easy to use menus, compact bodies compared with the opposition, ergonomic shutter release positions, quality optical viewfinders, pleasant to the touch materials etc.

I like my plain black KR BUT am very interested in the new CMOS backlit sensor waterproof Optio WG2 compact. That's hardly dull and no expensive name attached to its design!

Of course - that's the whole point. That's why we need it. The LCD screen doesn't and so we can't see it!!!

OMG OMG OMG!!! the Pentax mirrorless is too thick! keeping the k-mount means you lose the benefits of mirrorless which is thinner smaller cameras!
Says the people that want a camera that fits in their shirt pockets.
Morons forgot they need a lens, though...
