Believe me I know the difference, having worked as project leader for software teams on both desktop and web-based products. And in other lives having designed magazines, CD covers, posters, books, etc.Let's not confuse design and aesthetics. The design of Pentax cameras has always been excellent and still is. Here I mean quality of construction, ergonomics and quality of results.
So, why are the rear rosette positions different on the K-01? Why are K-5 shooting modes missing? Why is HDR now considered a mode? Do any of these choices make any sense at all?
Are large brick-like cameras now the "in thing"? Do they appeal to the kidz? Is yellow the new black? Does anyone in the real world even know who this designer is?
The K-5 is a nicely designed camera with great Pentax ergonomics. This is... a big mistake. It trashes the Pentax reputation. Just read what people are writing about it on other forums!

I'm holding out for a Spongebob Squarepants version.

Basically I think that covers it Bernard, but the only problem is the end result isn't that stylish IMHO.... I hope I'm proved wrong but I think most people will find the styling off-putting, apart from a few 'design buffs' who have drunk the kool-aid of postmodernism. So are they saying it is more about style than substance?
When I listened to Marc Newson's interviews about the K-01, and gazed upon it (and his other creations), I kept being reminded of this classic bit of Hitch Hikers dialogue -
Quote:
"And the wheel," said the Captain, "What about this wheel thingy? It sounds a terribly interesting project."
"Ah," said the product designer, "Well, we're having a little difficulty there."
"Difficulty?" exclaimed Ford. "Difficulty? What do you mean, difficulty? It's the single simplest machine in the entire Universe!"
The product designer soured him with a look.
"Alright, Mr. Wiseguy," she said, "if you're so clever, you tell us what colour it should be."
Rather than someone like Newson, I wish they had employed a team of top engineers to work on getting the body acceptably thin... or done something radically different. Some of the ideas flying around on the forums from people like Don were a lot better and more innovative than the end result IMHO! You hear this Pentax? Fire the guy who hired Marc Newson (into space preferably) and hire Don!

People who are sniping might be wrong in there assertions. They might very well be right. They should remain neutral and see what 'the market' thinks of it just to see who's right. At the minute theyre actively talking down the market just because its not for them leaving more chance of it becoming a self fulfilling prophecy.

I suppose- but this is a forum, it wouldn't be a very interesting place if we all said that would it?

I was wondering why I had been green lighted - this must be Don's thread!
Sean is probably right though about talking down the product. I felt the same way when people talked down the Q. Fortunately the target market for these products aren't really forum frequenters.
I would buy the K-01, by the way, as it has a few nifty features and will probably settle at a really good price (!) - but I am still mad as hell about M. N.'s 'design input' and would buy it despite his involvement rather than because of it.

It's not much less than they sell the K-5 for.
... Where's the new 40mm?
Customers also viewed ... a heap of Canon DSLR's. I bet (they didn't!)

Say what now? Postmodernism? What does that have to do with this?

I believe that is a complete misuse of the term. If there was a "postmodern design" (and I don't think there is such a thing) it would be about specificity of material and influence, a rejection of totalising ideologies, the erasing of previous boundaries (say, between "high" and "low" art), an interest in the vernacular, and so on. I'd be fascinated to see a design school that claimed to be postmodern and said that form should not follow function.

in case my other post gets deleted for linking to another forum.. here is a quote from singapore users hands on experience with the k-01:
Quote:
Many among the group plan to get one. No brainer upgrade for those shooting manual focus. The screen is good enough that any viewfinder is frankly redundant. New 40mm lens is really flat. Could do with a recessed thumb grip but the design definitely grows on you. Ribbed rubber texture is secure. Image quality is terrific, as is video. Camera is so quiet and vibration free. Breaks new ground in the mirrorless segment but DSLR purists will never understand this camera, but who cares, this camera will attract new users in a big way particularly price wise. Overall a big thumbs up to this camera.

Fired many shots. Didn't kill anything.
