With some of the harsh comments the camera is getting, I sort of wish they'd put the Marc Newson signature up front on the prism, and tucked the Pentax logo discreetly away on the base

But I think the 'designer camera' thing might partly be Pentax testing the water re a K-mount mirrorless... you know, if it does badly they can say it was a one-off design experiment and dump all the blame on Mr Newson . On the other hand it might show that there's an appetite for this sort of thing.

waittaminute..you mean people can improvise ways to work around a camera's shortcomings? lol!
seriously... I was talking in context of getting Pentax k-5+Pentax macro lens image quality...but you got me...and proved my point.. hehehe!
I refuse to believe an iPhone and magnifying glass can't match (or even exceed) the quality of a K-5 mounted with a D-FA 100mm Macro!

I mean come on, it's made by Apple for a start! It must be good!

and imagine the k-01 in it's full psychedelic glory...
remember we only got the storm trooper, ferrari red and black kr's...
I'm sure the k-01's will hit the Asian markets with multi colored grips and paint schemes...
so if you think it's ugly now, wait until the robot version or Hello Kitty version assaults your ocular faculties!
Fired many shots. Didn't kill anything.

So a K01 with K mount and an LCD screen

had a brief look at the ephotozine specs and pics

won't entirely discount it until seen one in the hand, but initial conclusion is that it's not for me.

If pentax make a K5+ with something like an electro-reflective permanent mirror, which would reflect with no power and be transparent when power applied - so there's still an optical preview i.e. an SLR with slightly different mirror technology , giving nearly zero delay and virtually silent operation then I might be interested when I have to replace my K5.

A purely electronic tunnel viewfinder is not appealing to me, one which optionally augments available light when its rather dim could be useful however, I prefer WYSIWIG.

Until then nah, more interested in the recent compact with interchangeable lenses or a medium format.

We've got the Sony sensor, why not the Sony EVF?
Maybe Pentax didn’t ask.

Or maybe Sony feel that with the deskilling of the camera manufacturers - ex Canon and maybe Samsung - in core sensor technology and their near total reliance on third party technology, they have a unique opportunity to exploit a potentially sustainable competitive advantage in sensor/image processing/EVF integration backed up by IP.

Its an age thing. Since turning 40 I need to put on reading glasses for anything close to me, like an l.c.d. display. Then I have to take them off again to look at the subject I am photographing. That’s not to mention the fact that even with glasses, in strong sunlight I can’t make out the LCD image on the back of the camera. I can manage fine without glasses all the time when looking through a viewfinder, optical or electronic – even if the latter is inferior. That’s why, sadly, there is no point in me even thinking about getting a K-01.

I guess I am waiting for something similar from Pentax with EVF, even better with FF. Myself apart hats off to Pentax for breaking new ground in such a bold manner, I hope the K-01 is a big success.

But then, hats seriously back on again for the price hike as the camera crosses the Atlantic. $749 = £474, NOT £630 (that’s a 33% more to buy here than in the US). This country is so Velcro.

Have you handled one yet Matt ? I tried one out yesterday - there is no way I could use it, it is tiny and my thumb completely covers the 4-way in any normal use ! Maybe ladies will like it. Petite isn't the word, minuscule is !

Do you know that the sale of Chihuahuas in the USA has muchroomed, like atom bomb mushroomed, since Paris Hilton has been shown here, there and everywhere with her pooch ? Maybe Pentax know something about Newson we don't

I just can't shake the feeling that it is what a child would have drawn 30 or so years ago if you'd asked them what a camera from the future looked like.

It seems like the K-01 was first shown in the UK, as Marc Newson lives in London. So, he had the privilege to present his work before CP+. Did somebody here join the release party?

If only it was as simple as that exchange rates fluctuate so there has to be a margin involved there plus the VAT element....

I think the people wanting a k-mount with evf and articulated screen had best wait for Ricoh to release a k-mount grx...
I suspect a weather sealed k-02 with evf is already being developed for release in 1-2 years...

think about it.. if you were Ricoh.. wouldn't you go this way? get your r&d money back, then see what sells better?

There is some similarities with Nikon 1:
- Nikon 1 had not viewfinder
- Nikon 1 use NIKKOR objectives, K-01 use K-mount obj.

but Nikon offers a wide selection of classic DSLR with optical viewfinder.
