Concerning the focus lock, recompose then shoot technique - I do think on the k7 there is custom menu item specifically to allow this with a half press of the shutter button. So maybe in the example talked about earlier this was just not set?

That's probably the default as its a long-standing technique, but if I remember rightly it's controlled with a menu setting, the alternative being the half press has no effect.
I may be wrong but if not then I'd be glad to assume the title of official pentaxuser camera settings geek!
Or, maybe I've already attained that most high distinction

Yes that mantle was passed on from Anvh to you some time ago. Did you not receive the invite to the ceremony?
The options are to AF on the half press, or via the AF button. I prefer the former. It's the selection of AF-S or AF-C which decides whether the camera focuses once and then stays put, or continually focusses.

The AF locks as long as I keep the button half pressed, Nigel. I can't recall setting it up that way but it's how my cameras have always worked in AF-S mode.
Why not just use the back AF button Will and disregard the half-shutter press altogether? I find this very fast and flexible and the focus stays firmly locked after recomposing. The AF locks as long as I keep the button half pressed, Nigel. He's wearing a cardigan, glasses - and has a beard You have to listed to someone who so closely resembles a university lecturer
Seriously he makes some good points for full frame but then mentions he uses a crop sensor camera

And he has one of those strangle throat whiny nerdy American voices that Bill Gates annoys people with. not sure I can stomach more than 30 seconds of it but I'll grit my teeth for a few minutes.

Perhaps a little unfair on my occupation? but I admire your staying power. You have to listed to someone who so closely resembles a university lecturer
After 10 seconds I decided to remain blissfully unaware of this f.f. vs. crop sensor explanation.

Wow, thats excellent, thanks! No, didn't get the invite, but you know, the post has been quite poor around here lately - hope everyone else had a good do That Anvh knows his stuff though - I've got a hard act to follow! Now, how can I fill up all the never ending nights in - YES, I'll order in a whole range of camera instruction manuals and get down to some serious study! Yes that mantle was passed on from Anvh to you some time ago. Did you not receive the invite to the ceremony? .

I've tried this also David - its a great option to have, and what amazingly flexible things our Pentax DSLRs are! But I do think the 'half-press to focus' thing is one of those long ingrained camera actions that has become hard-wired into the picture-taking psyche. Its a very hard one to break I think.

On Pentax auto select AF, the camera's few AF points would just focus at random on the kid, the coffee table, Auntie Noreen's knee, etc, making it pretty useless!
